Re: cummins in a ford

"Just imagine the utter practical beauty of a Cummins 5.9L in a brand-new Super Duty."

You got that right. I drive one every day.

"From what I understand... body lift is needed for folks doing NEWER Cummins conversions because the oil pan on the 04.5 and newer engines is so deep."

This is WRONG. The newer oil pans are very thin right where they go over the frame cross members on most trucks. The older engines had a deeper pan there. I had no height problems whatsoever with my conversion. I could easily drop my engine another inch or two if I had to, but didn't. It already sits lower than the Powerstroke engine did, relative to the top of the hood.

I made a cardboard template of my engine while I was sizing up how it was going to fit. The height from the thin part of the fan to the top of the plastic valve cover is only 24". That is shorter than a Powerstroke. A Powerstroke has Vee'd cylinders, but the pan is deeper and there is all the junk sitting in the Vee, like the oil pump, fuel filter assembly and turbo.

I was on the phone with JASON at ford Cummins, very helpful. I have a 1991 F350 Dump truck, 2WD, with a 5.8L 351 small block gas (yeah i know what your thinking--- what were they thinking), anyway, I will need to get a engine and a trans since theres no way to hook the small block ZF 5spd to a cummins. I think the easiest thing will be a Dodge getrag 5spd from a 2WD Dodge 3500, but i am told they did not make many 2WD 3500s with a cummins... So far, its tough to find a decent engine for less than $2500.... Not sure if this will work out, or I'll just go buy a FORD with a Powerstroke already in it. the conversion cost will easily exceed $4500 here.....
