Cummins L10 problems....

Have a 93 L10 - 300 (non celect) upon startup it smokes and runs rough, once warm it smooths out and no smoke exept on load. Strangly when i use the block heater it does not smoke for the first 5 mins of start up but then starts to run rough again and smoke until warm....???

could the thermostat cause this? Hoping its not major like a leaky head gasket, or injectors, though the engine consumes no oil or coolant, and there is no evidence of water in the oil....

any help would be great

We have a tractor on our farm with a '92 non-electric L10 as well. We had similar problems that turned out to be a problem with the fuel pump. We did fuel pump and injectors at the same time and that helped it out a lot. Might be due to have the injectors gone through. I don't think that the thermostat would have anything to do with the symptoms you describe either. Ours probably had about 4000-4500 hours on it at the time. Definately hard hours though.

More than likely an injector(s) problem. You'd have white smoke pretty much all the time if the thermostat was stuck.
