cummins life?

Looking at a 95 2500 dodge, with a lot of miles. Over 421k showing on engine, its also an auto trans. No major repairs ever done to either engine or trans. What kind of life expectancy would be considered normal, for a well maintained engine?

Re: cummins life?

Well i'd say if those are highway miles it's probably okay. But either way i guess, that does seem like alot. Our Ram has about 200,000 miles on it and that thing gets abused more than anything i've ever seen. It was run with probably a quart or two of oil for thousands of miles. Leaked oil like crazy, never had the turbo cooled down after a hard run, never has had the coolant changed, and it still runs pretty good.

The thing that would have me worried most is that tranny with 421k miles on it. Our auto was done for in abut 100k miles i believe.

Anyways, I'd say, if everything was cared for very well, it should be able to last alot longer, the engine at least. The tranny might not.

Re: cummins life?

With that many miles on the truck I would be worried about all kinds of things going wrong. But who knows, most trucks don't last that long so with good care anything is possible. Towbin Dodge out here in Henderson (the King of Cars on A&E) had a 95 Dodge Cummins 12 Valve diesel on their lot that had 972,000 miles on it. You couldn't tell by looking at it, it held up surprisingly well. The guy who owned it drove the truck delivering RV's all over the country. Check it over real good and if the price is right go for it.

Re: cummins life?

I think the truck has been serviced on a regular routine, for a 12 year old truck it is in real good condition, body wise. They are asking 4k, and thats firm. It has a service body and hyd tailgate, which I won't need if I buy the truck.(anyone need it?)......Bud

Re: cummins life?

I seen 3 in person with over 500k. Talked at length with diesel engine rebuilders that say highway miles you can get 800k out of em.

Re: cummins life?

My brother just bought a '93 Dodge dually extended cab a few months ago. Odometer shows 412K miles. He bought it off a guy in California. Flew out there and drove it back. It's really in mint condition. The previous owner delivered magazines for a living. Mostly highway non-towing miles. Looks brand new under the hood. The guy was a real freak about maintenance and such.

My brother paid $4500 for the truck. I thought he was off his rocker at first, buying such a high-mileage truck without test driving it first, but after looking at the truck in person, I can't believe it myself. The engine's original, but the tranny's been rebuilt once or twice.

Re: cummins life?

I found a '92 on ebay a while ago that had 625,000 on it, so I'm sure a newer one will go well beyond that.
