Detroit 60 - Aux Shutdown Help Needed!!

I need some expert technical help please guys. I really hope you can help.

I have used a Detroit Diesel Series 60 for a custom build.

I need an auxillary shutdown to protect certain bits of machinery in the event of a fault or emergency stop.

The DDEC V Vehicle Interface Harness diagram shows cable no V-41 as being 'Aux Shutdown 1'.

When I switch this cable to ground the engine stops as expected, but has trouble re-starting once the cable is cleared. Not everytime, but more often than not.

If it won't start after several attempts I find that killing the power to the EEC and restarting it 'clears' the problem.

What am I doing wrong? Is there some kind of reset I need to use?

I hope you can help, thanks in advance.

Steve.

I would think you need to recycle the ignition source after an aux shutdown occurance. The fact that you say sometimes it starts again sometimes it doesn't has me second guessing myself however. You take the circuit and "unground" it and try to start again without recycling the ignition? Do you have a Check Engine Light and Stop Engine Light wired up? If so are they still lit while you are trying to start it?

I looked in the application and installation manual and it doesn't say any specific logic on the way the feature works such as restart etc...Other than what the function can be used for.

I would route the wire to a relay and go from there. Sometimes you are pushing to much power into the ecm and creating excessive power. Try that.

Thanks for the help, but i'm still stuck.......

Cable V-41 is switched through a 24VDC N/O relay to ground which is in turn controlled by a PLC. This operation is working correctly.

Gone Fishen - "Sometimes you are pushing to much power into the ecm and creating excessive power"

Can you please explain further? surely Ohms' law limits amperage no matter how it is switched?

DieselSVT -

It is unsuitable to recycle the ignition supply after an aux shutdown, because I have used a serial converter to convert canbus to modbus in order to control and display all engine parameters remotely via a touch screen.

When ignition source is switched off it flags up all engine alarms eg. low engine voltage, engine temperature, etc, because of the loss of canbus, and initiates a complete shutdown of the unit. I need to avoid this ideally so I don't have to write a new program for the PLC. It's fairly complex already.

Any other ideas? Please, i'm stuck.

I'm sure it's a detroit problem. I have another unit the same and that is starting to show the same symptoms when under test. That rules out loose terminals etc.

Thanks guys.

I wasn't in my thoughts when I answered the question. You asked the question and answered it yourself. If you program the circuit to an 'aux shutdown' that is what you will get. SHUTDOWN. Now do this, in the programming section and look under 'protection'. click on the aux box and set it to either 1-shutdown, 2 ramp down, or 3 warning. This way you will get a rampdown in power then the shutdown, OR just warning light and NO shutdown. Programming for a shutdown will require a recycle of the key. My bad for not thinking last night.
