Diesel exhaust system starting grassfires

Yesterday my dad mentioned to me that he read an article that reminded hunters not to park their vehicles in tall grass because the exhaust can start a grassfire. No new news for me there. But they also mentioned that newer diesel trucks have an even greater risks becuase of the emissions crap they put on the exhausts. I heard something like that where someone mentioned that the new 07 duramax can have an exhaust system temp of 500 degress(that doesn't sound right to me, but that's what I remembered) This got me to wondering if my dads 05 duramax may have a greater potential to start grassfires that earlier diesels or is this something that's associated with the new 07 diesels.

Re: Diesel exhaust system starting grassfires

There have been several conversations about this. Any of the new diesel trucks using the regeneration process to clean a DPF (diesel particulate filter)increase their EGT (exhaust gas temperatures) in order to clean the dpf. The elevated EGT's would make you think these trucks would be starting grass fires 10 times as fast as the catalytic converters did when they first came out.

While the possibility is real, apparently the exhaust tip technology today has prevented all the fires we have been expecting to read about in the papers.

Re: Diesel exhaust system starting grassfires

Older diesels could start a fire, just like any other vehicle. But the new diesel with all the emissions stuff are a lot more likely to start one. The exhaust is hot on the new ones, I don't know the exact temps of the exhaust coming out, but the regeneration needs it hot, something like 1200 degrees. One spot that gets hot on the 05's would be the catalytic converter. Those things really hold the heat. After the vehicle has set for awhile, the exhaust pipe will be cool, but the cat will still be warm.
