Diesel fuel foaming during fill up

Anyone had a problem with fuel foaming as it is pumped into your Superduty?
I had it happen a couple times at different stations while traveling during the winter. I chalked this up as station issues. Today I had the same issue at 2 local stations while trying to fill up. Now I am confused. Anyone have any information or most importantly a solution. Thanks.

Our 88 foams like crazy if the pump pumps too fast. One time I had to trickle it into the tank since it was foaming so bad. And my 97 back filler neck is crushed in half due to a dent and it can only take so much at a time. I guess pump slower. That usually works or reposition the nozzle in the hole.

Foaming is the nature of diesel fuel.

They all do that. Do a maroon harpoon mod to the vent tube and you will be able to fill within 2 gallons of the neck. Then slowly add the last two gallons until there is clear fuel all the way to the fill cap.

Common problem with diesel. Some supplies worse than others.
One trick is to full flow the bowser pump as a partial opening of gun creates foam in the delivery gun and you are putting froth into the tank.
An on the farm type of overhead tank has no problem as it is not frothing the diesel.
Regards
Ron

Thanks for the help everyone. I will be harpooning the tank in the near future.

With the stock setup, the pump will click off when you get within about 5 gallons of plumb full.

After the harpoon mod, the pump will click off when you get within about 2 gallons of plumb full.

So the harpoon mod won't eliminate the problem, but it means you'll spend about 3/5ths less time trickling in the fuel past the foam to get the tank plumb full.

If you don't get the tank plumb full - so liquid diesel is visable in the fuel filler neck - then you cannot get an accurate fuel mileage check.

Yes, it requires several minutes to get the tank plumb full, even with the harpoon mod. But I insist on doing it so I can get accurate fuel mileage numbers.

Some truckstop pumps make it almost impossible to fill up. Flying J is one of the worst ones I've tried to use. So when I use one of those pumps that won't trickle in the last few gallons of fuel slow enough, I usually just write down the gallons and wait until I fill up next time to compute fuel mileage.

Thankfully, the truckstop near me, as well as the nearest Wal-Mart/Murphy (which usually has better diesel prices), have pumps that will allow me to trickle in the fuel slow enough to fill up.

If you're at a pump that will allow the fuel flow to slow down well, just let off the nozzle trigger some to let it slow down then pull the nozzle back out of the filler neck to near the top then angle the nozzle a bit upwards into the filler neck and the foam will most often turn to just clear diesel and then you can top off right up to the top of the filler neck with clear diesel not foam diesel.

Smokey,we did that when filling your truck up a couple of times when we were on one of the trips to NASCAR we made with you.

I will admit that some pumps are harder to do it with than others but most often it works.

Dick

My foaming issue is when I start fueling an almost empty tank all the way to full. And it is not every time fill up. That is the part I can't figure out.

Cenex (Cennex?) fuel doesn't foam like other fuels do. Something about the additives they put in it iirc.

Really? i haven't experienced this so far. Maybe the diesel loaded was already expired. That's my take.
