So I just received an ET Blast on my smog machine....... we will be testing beginning Jan 1, 2010 all 1998 and newer diesel pwered vehicles with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) up to and including 14,000 pounds will be subject to biennial and change of ownership inspections.
I feel sorry for all of you guys that have mods on your trucks, all I can say is good luck to you guys i'll try to help you guys thru the process as much as I can.
This is just going to be a visual inspection from what I've heard. The way inspections work, with gassers, is that they do a OBD test first then do the visual inspection. Meaning, you could very well have your vehicle within spec, but fail the visual inspection because of mods like deletes of sorts or something even more simple like intakes.

Actually there will be 3 parts to the exam. The first will be visual meaning exactly what we do in a regular smog check for EGR O2 ......etc no mods, if yu do have mods they have to have eo numbers from CARB.
Second will be a OBDII test done on the vehicle which checks for any type of codes you may have in the computer memory whether it be soft codes or hard codes. Now if you do have codes and but the light is off and the readiness monitors are set ( set meaning at least 2 max can not be ready ) you will pass the OBDII test. If you have no codes ( because you just reset the light before coming to a smog station ) then you will fail due to the readiness monitors not being set and obviously if you have not codes and monitors are set you will pass pass pass all day on that section of the smog test.
Now third is the trick part. We will be doing a snap throttle test on the vehicles. It consists of 3 snaps of the throttle each about 2-3 second apart from 2500 rpms to 3000 rpms little less little more... We will be checking to make sure no black smut.... and i repeat no black smoke or smut coming from the tail pipe I am not talking about condensation which comes out and disipates I am talking about black smoke that lingers in the air for a while and does not disipate. I do know that if you have a after market computer upgrade make sure its setting are low or at least back to stock before brings it in.
Any q's let me know hope this info has been helpful.

Don't feel bad. All "heavy duty" diesel vehicles (Class 4 and up) pre 2007 are being required to put on diesel particulate traps if they even DRIVE THROUGH Calif., even if registered in another state. Motorhomes serendipitously excepted.
So a bunch of Unimog guys I am acquainted with are frantically looking for Alaskan campers etc.
California keeps going on its' merry insane way....
MHS..just curious cause Nv. test diff. except for 1. visual. So..if you pass on 1. visual (req'd emission parts) & 2. OBD, but fail 3. visual smoke, then what happens?
btw...here..t.p. sniffer figures out level of particulants being emitted = pass/fail. I dont know how one argues with a machine, but with a person that's diff. Anyhow, update in Jan if you can. TIA.
Hey sorry for the long delay. Well if you do fail the visual smoke parts you are going to have to find why it is smoking and fix the problem. As far as I know we will not be sticking anything up tail pipes for a while just check for visual smoke.

I thought I saw on the news this last week that the trucking industry "picketed" Sacramento and the EPA admitted the guy they used for testing was NOT QUALIFIED.. and now they are going to have to start all over again on the DPF stuff.

I read on the BAR that air cleaners won't be checked for CARB EO exemption. Exhaust modifications as long as exhaust treatment remains in tact (e.g., urea injection, diesel particulate filter) are also not on the inspection hit list. Intake manifolds are. Programmers/chips are.

So much for my moving to California ... I am building a diesel trike ... Using an '86 6.9 IDI ...
Well your engine in the trike would be exempt from the smog laws (for now) I for one would love to see a diesel trike. When I say for now, I mean they (the goonies that think this crap up) just might make all of us retro fit with a dpf or something.

My hard part is keeping the db under 90 on't want anyone to hear me till I hit the train horns ... I may have to run 8 short pipes with Harley baffles in each one ...
