Ford Escort Diesel

I just bought a 1985 Ford Escort diesel from an impound auction. Looks to be in good condition, can't tell if it runs yet ( no battery), but it was impounded for being abandoned in the roadway, so it ought to be in reasonable condition.

Does anyone know anything about these engines? I understand its a Mazda engine, but that's about all I know. It's got a 5-speed, front-drive, four-door wagon. It's ugly as piss, but if I can get it running, it should be pretty efficient.

Henry

first thing---make sure the timing belt aint broke--cause if it is, scrap it out--i have a new head--which aint cheap, bit it will break the tops of the pistons sometimes when the belt breaks--------ive owned three diff vehicles with that engine---

The accountant that told the engineers to design an interference type diesel engine with a timing belt deserves a very awful fate.

I'll second that. What would we do without bean counters?

Humor me, what's an "interference type diesel engine?"

It is an engine that if left to its own devices will "interfere" with itself. Most common examples of this it pistons hitting valves.

I.E. A interference engine that breaks a timing belt. The top half of the engine is no longer in sync with the bottom half. With the top half of the engine no longer turning the valves that are open are in the way of the approaching piston. The result is lots of bad noises, broken/bent valves, damaged heads, and damaged pistons. This results in a total replacement of the engine.

On a non inerference engine the top half stops turning and the engine dies on the side of the road due to the wrong piston having fuel and air in it. This results in a replacement of the timing belt and your on your way.

I may not be a mechanic, but Option A doesn't sound like the best design for an engine. I like Option B better.

I had one. It was an '84 if I remember correctly. It had a Mitsubishi diesel in it and I got 50 mpg driving back and forth to work with it. It had plenty of power in that Escort though. I'd like to have one like it now!

It was really shoehorned into the car and was a bear to work on. It took me a couple of days to change the water pump and the manual said that you had to remove the engine from the car to replace the starter!

I still have the manuals.

Nope. It does look a little ragged, though, and I'll be replacing it. Jerry/MT is right, though. She's an awkward one to work on. Why couldn't they use a damn chain?

Jerry/MT: If you want to make a few bucks and want to part with those manuals...

Well, you might have just found a 'jewel' . Good luck getting it going again. Oh, your location says Alaska... better make sure it's block heater works and/or glow plug system (if it has one that is). I've love a diesel that gets 50mpg.

I wouldn't call it a jewel, but I'm looking forward to tinkering with it. Maybe this weekend. I'll keep you posted.

Also, it'll likely be a summer only car.

I moved recently and I haven't unpacked that box yet, but if I can find I'll post back. Yeah, I'll sell 'em. I have no need of them.
