Fuel theft

Fuel theft. I have locking fuel caps on my vehicles. I have spoken to several people about fuel costs, and I keep hearing of people punching holes in the bottom of cars and trucks and taking the fuel that way. I notice this is always "I heard". I have never known anyone that this has happened to.

Urban myth?

Well, I lock my front door and they will break a window to get in. I lock my gas tank, and they may punch a hole in it. I guess I can hope they do it while smoking a dobie and I am in a large parking lot.

I took the locking caps off the truck. I figure it's cheaper to replace the fuel than the tanks.

Does this really happen? Fuel theft? I know gas prices are increasing but i can't believe people would really resort to this.

I work for a medium sized fire dept, and know the local sheriff and police fairly well. Meaning, I would either respond to the spill, or hear of it. That being said, I have yet to have either of the above happen in our 180 square mile district. I am sure it is possible to happen to me, as someone could break into my home. Heck, they were stealing fuel from trucks and cars, (gas only this time) where I was in a state campground. I think a bit of deterant may help.

All depends where your at. I know around the larger cities around me its been hapening. There was a few stories on the news about it. They choose to punch a hole in the bottom of the tank as its easier than trying to get a hose down the a gas neck. They take what they want and let the rest run out on the ground. If prices keep climbing it will get worse!
