This is my first post, so hello everyone. I'm not a diesel owner, but they're calling my name and so is 700 ft lbs of torque, so here I am.
I want to know if there is any possible way to get a Jeep Grand Cherokee 3.0L CRD registered in the state of New York. I've read through the DMV's stuff, about how you need 7500 miles on the odometer and a bunch of other stuff, but I'm looking more for loopholes. Does anyone know anything about the topic? I see and hear plenty of diesels around, so I know that not all of them are blocked, and they sell the fuel, so that's evidence also.

I your talking about importing a Euro spec version; the guy at the corner quick mart prob could tell you more than a DC dealer. Local dealers can't order but what is in the order guides. I guess if you put a big enough pile of money on the table, most anyone might take a stab as an import broker.
I was originally talking about the yet to be introduced model; it's due for production early 2007. If you think the Euro model would be easier to get registered, I'm game.
I don't even think it would be available from a New York dealer, so I would probably have to travel to New Jersey or Conneticut to buy one.
If anyone has any history with registering their vehicle through a loophole, please let me know!
The beast is gonna be built in Detroit and the engine shipped from Berlin to be sold in North America.

Like I said, drop in the local Jeep dealer and leave your card with the hungriest looking saleman....Tell him what you want and to call you when he has it lined out.

The problem is that the 07's will only be 45 state compliant. New York is not one of the 45.
I think you're gonna have to wait until '08 for when the 50-state compliant vehicles come out. But that means you'd have to wait another year before you can get one.
Having lived in New York for most of my life, I understand your frustration with some of these laws.

UPDATED 1/1/09 Replace so far. 1 LUK flywheel+clutch, 2 thermostats, 2 set of brakes, 1 set of calipers, 5 CPS, 3 sets of tires, 2 Transfer pumps, 1 Injector modual, 1 Computer, 2 Alt, 2 sets of batteries, 1 Water pump, 6 Belts, 1 PS hose, 2 Sets ball joints, 2 set u-joints, 2 carrier bearing, 2 Speed sensors, 1 oil pres sender, 1 temp sender, 4 sets of e-break cables, 1 front fuel tank, 2 rear fuel tanks, 2 set of glow plugs, 7 Glow plug relays, Oil galley o-rings, Turbo pedistal o-rings, EBPV o-rings, 3 sets of Injector O-rings, 1 Vac-pump, 1 new carpet, 1 total paint job.Total $$$ in repairs v/s miles driven = 4.6 cents per mile. Add fuel to that it jumps to 16.5 cents per mile over the life of the truck.

[/ QUOTE ]Yep, I did the same for many years due to high personal property taxes and/or registration fees in the various places I've lived. Most states then had a '2 out of three law' where just 2 out of three items had to match....The three being residential address, driver's license, and plates.

Thanks for the helpful hints... I would love to register it elsewhere, except my family doesn't own any property or anything elsewhere, and I don't want to entrust any of my relatives with such a responsibility. Most of them are lunatics.
New York certainly is like no other place in the world... It's too bad that the resort community I live in (Long Island) is too expensive for anyone to start a life in. My folks will be moving south sometime in the next decade, but I'm not waiting that long.
Registering in another state is a piece of cake. Go get a PO box. NOT a PO box from the post office, but one from a place like Mailboxes etc, whatever. Those boxes give you a street address, and a "suite" number. 12345 Main St, Suite 205, Whatever City, AZ, etc. No one at the DMV will know that's a PO box. If they question it, you tell them it's your office. You can even have them forward all the mail to your real residence, if you pay them the postage up front. I bought a new Harley when I was in Vegas about 6 years ago. Because it wasn't CA compliant, they said I needed a local address. They told me where to go for the PO box. I do it all the time now, if I have a problem vehicle.

If you really want it that bad just get a friend in CT or VT or do the P.O. box thing. I know in South Dakota all you do is stay one night in a local hotel and that establishes residency.
Alot of the RV'ers do that and there is a company that forwards all your stuff. My buddy is registered in SD and lives elsewhere cause its cheaper.
Then you can sell it to someone in your family and buy it back or whatever and register it as used when the time comes or when its "used" enough.

I would look into the "registering it elsewhere" thing, but carefully. I know of some of the motorhome crowd do it on a regular basis to save tag fees, but mostly to save on the one time sales tax since a 200K plus motorhome is still considered a motor vehicle. One problem with the out of state address is the local police seeing you driving up the road almost everyday over a period of time deciding to stop you and check everything out to perhaps see if you just moved there and forgot about the 30-60 day or whatever your state has as a time period to change plates. You will have a local driver's license but the vehicle will be registered elsewhere. Most will be OK with this, but you could run into someone who decides to check out the PO box. Even with the MailBox etc type setup an officer who decides to really check things out might cause a problem. I have seen people do the dirt bike to dual sport bike thing through other states several times. Don,t let this scare you away from getting the vehicle if you really want it, just use common sense, It is possible for someone to have a grandfather or uncle who just bought a vehicle and a few weeks later became unable to drive. It can be done, but most of your problems will be from people and the local law enforcement within just a few miles from your home who see the vehicle most everyday. Now a different question; what is the actual time limit and mileage for a non-complient vehicle? I have heard 6K, 7K, 18K as far as mileage, and 6 months to 18 months as far as mileage in various states.
