General DieselDiscussion about diesels in general. All brands are welcome, please refrain from brand wars. Discussions about types of diesel fuel also go here.
You do understand how Hybrids work right? You promote them on one hand than bash them and say they are for the rich on the other.
You recover energy while braking that would otherwise go to waste as heat to enhance the acceleration capabilities of an undersized engine.
The principle is simple and on-highway mileage still increases because a smaller engine under higher load producing the same horsepower as a larger engine with a lower load will consume less fuel. (don't correct my grammar)
Remember that Hybrids are not yet mainstream so manufacturers are still recovering developement costs by using them in their high-end big cars.
Instances like our silly pick up trucks most of which are used as cars. Now a real truck pulling a constant heavy load needs constant torque and there electric would flater.
I will interject that my old 98.5 dodge had only 235 HP and I think 400 torque? It pulled everything I put behind it and then some. For most instances I think a 200 HP very efficient diesel and 150 HP electric assist would do quite nicely.
The new Tahoe Hybrid SUV for example is great but overkill. They have 332 HP and 367 of gas engine torque AND another 100 HP electric. Thats a ton of power and a ton of torque. They could have easily used the much cheaper and more economy minded 4.8 V-8 and combined with the the electric they would have even better MPG. 295 HP with another 100 HP electric should be enough for a SUV????
Everything has gone so overkill, why just to out do the other guy?

Bashing one car is not equal to bashing them all. That car never ran on just electric which is what a car needs to do if it wants to get 50+ mpg in the city. It was only used to give the meiserly engine a boost in hp. Thats why they called it a mild hybrid. Drop the electric and you still have a 40mpg car. The idea of electric assist is the wrong road imo.
I seen a billionare getting in a prius on tv. If he can drive a 50mpg city car all the rich and famous should be able to.
100,000 volts would be a nice production run. Toyota is saying their expectations are impossible to attain so it will be interesting if they can get 40 miles off a battery pack. These are the guys that built the ev1 so they might pull it off but even I am doubtful.
They are saying hybrid sales are falling off? They are sold out here, you cant even get one. I been seeing em everywhere with dealer stickers still on em. Im seeing all sorts of new compacts with dealer stickers on em that Ive never even seen before. I spoke to a lady in the grocery store a couple days ago that had just ordered her 3rd. A prius for her, her husband, and their college bound daughter.

Yes, and that's why. Sales are off, not demand. Tough to make another sale when your inventory's depleted.

I dont get it. They had a backlock of em on the lots, sold em all at once, then sales fell off? Thats a pretty dumb writer then. My story woulda read Inventories of hybrids sold out! instead of sales are falling off.

I do know that they are selling ones that are 2 years old that have the special commuter only pass in California on e bay for as much as $10K over what they really are selling for.
I'd post the e-bay add but I'm sure you know who would edit my post.

I figured with demand booming they would be asking over sticker. Someone told me yesterday they had looked into it but there was a 2 year waiting list. LOL, I think he was pulling my leg.
