Obviously common sense is not required to buy a Heavy duty pu and haul some weight.
This goes back to the belief that NO common sense is required by the American consumer and this is why the manufacturers have made all the gauges idiot proof.
Just because one vehicle (Duramax) is less capable than another (Cummins or 7.3) does not mean it is faulty. It's just less capable. All my CATs run hotter than my Cummins motors but that does not mean they are faulty it just means the limits of the equipment are lower.
I sell Kenworths for a living and if the average trucker just felt that under all conditions he should be able to just run up the road at full throttle no matter what every truck would have blown up by now.

No, all they needed to do was put a bigger radiator in the cats. I have an E model cat and the thing did start to heat pulling long hard hills. I had them put a new bigger radiator in it and I can run that thing all day long and I cant get the needle to move. It comes down to putting the right equipment in the truck from the start.

Sorry Flores but if you knew much about the modern emissions motors you would know that the cooling systems have been optimized and just making them larger is not something that can be done at this point due to simple space constraints. E motors are ancient history.
The only way to GUARANTEE that a certain motor hauling a very heavy load absolutely will not overheat under even the most trying conditions is to WAY underrate the motor. For instance, Cat could guarantee their motor would not run hot under any circumstances if they rated it at say 200 hp. But that is not acceptable 99% of the time when not hauling under these horrendous conditions so they give you more hp and expect you to use a bit of common sense when needed.
Some people have this theory that you should be able to load the thing up as heavy as possible, run it absolutely full throttle indefinitely on the hottest day of the year, and the manufacturer should plan for this outrageous circumstance as part of their design perimeters? ***? They are not designed to be absolutely idiot proof.

Couldn't agree more. Years back I was having a slight overheating problem under extreme towing conditions after I installed my ATS turbo kit. Talking to a 7.3 Ford diesel mechanic he said, "You think you got problems, I got a guy's pickup in here, turbocharged, and he pulls a 19,000 lb. high profile 5th wheel and I'm supposed to solve his overheating problem". The Ford rep had told him he wished these huge heavy trailer designers had to design the trucks to pull them with.
I did fix mine however by installing the late model front bumper trim piece and cutting out the later model air holes in my bumper.
i guess the arguement of the post is that this guy wasn't pulling over his weight rating. so should his truck overheat while pulling less than max weight rating?

This one has gone around the barn several times, time to move on I would think. The point has been made about the driver's lack of concern with his equipment.
