How long will Diesel fuel keep?

I know that diesel breaks down quicker that gasoline. My question is:

How long can you keep diesel fuel in storage containers (i.e. 5 gallon cans) before it goes bad. I assume that adding in an additive will help extend the shelf life - but how long .

Anyone have any info or comments?

Thanks!

Re: How long will Diesel fuel keep?

Gasoline should be used in 60 days or so.

Diesel will easily last a year if it's kept dry and free from contamination.

Look near the bottom under FAQ.

There was a post here sometime ago about a diesel automobile that was in storage for something like 26 years and was still able to be run on the old fuel. Diesel lasts much longer than untreated gasoline. Not sure if Sta-Bil works on diesel like it does on gasoline.

Re: How long will Diesel fuel keep?

Diesel will last indefinitely if stored properly.

Re: How long will Diesel fuel keep?

My little Kubota sits for months on end and I never had a fuel related problem. Dang gasoline in the mower and trimmer on the other hand..

Not sure where some folks get their info.

Re: How long will Diesel fuel keep?

Wow, that's good to know. I guess I was wrong - I thought diesel broke down quicker than gasoline. Thanks for all the info & quick replies everyone .

Re: How long will Diesel fuel keep?

Hm, as I have my PhD in Chemistry I should know but why does fuel or gas break down? They are so small molecules that there cannot be a break up reaction at normal conditions. The only thing I ever heard is that there are some organisms living in it. A bigger problem for fuel companies or oil tankers, though.

Re: How long will Diesel fuel keep?

I started a Kubota B3000 that hadn't been touched in 10 years on the 10 year old Diesel fuel in it's tank.

Ran great!

Re: How long will Diesel fuel keep?

Also try Pri-D. I've used it and have had no problems. Fuel looks clean and clear as the day I bought it.

Re: How long will Diesel fuel keep?

I bought a boat once, it sat for 15 months with the tanks full, it ran fine, I couldn't tell any difference when I filled up with fresh fuel.

Re: How long will Diesel fuel keep?

My boat holds 205 gallons of gasoline, and sits from late October till late April. Sometimes I add Sta-Bil, sometimes I don't. Always runs fine.

Re: How long will Diesel fuel keep?

have taken fuel oil out of house barrels that were there for 30 yrs with no use--fuel was fine--and had no organisms--temp controlled basement probably helps--but have taken it out of junk cars and trucks also--no problems--im a scavenger---
