how rare is this?

I have the chance to buy an 86 Chevy K20 silverado, with a 6.2 diesel and a manual tranny, which HAS an overdrive. I've never seen one before, have you?

Re: how rare is this?

If there is no rust and the engine compartment is stock it is a rare thing these days.

Ask if the head gaskets have been changed. If they have not I am betting you will be.

Assuming it's a four speed, with lots of four speeds and bigger (in physical size and number of gears) you can press gears off the countershaft, switch the corresponding ones on the main shaft,re-assemble them in a different order and your highest gear is no longer direct, it's an overdrive. Your shift lever pattern becomes different also.

Re: how rare is this?

Well by saying "HAS an overdrive", i just mean it's not like the regular low geared 4 speed put in these trucks(actually a 3 speed with a granny). I mean it isnt L,1,2,3....it's 1,2,3,OD.

only thing id worry about is these trucks, chevy diesels, tend to be x military if it is its problay been beaten ran till it died then they put in a new drive train and ran it till it got bad then sold it

if its always been a civilian truck and you could prove that id say berret jackson auto auction they rarer than most 60000$ muscle cars

Re: how rare is this?

actually if it is a military truck, then it's possible that it has been abused but not likely. (Most) military vehicles are low mileage and have had regular maintenance performed on them.

Re: how rare is this?

Yeah, military vehicles do get regular maintenance, but they also get beat on pretty hard, just like rental vehicles.

Good point, but all I remember from our USAR motorpool were K2500 6.2's w/ auto trans. Should be able to read the VIN and see if it is original.

Re: how rare is this?

also, if it were ex-military it'd have been 24volt, which is a dead give away. even if it's been converted back to 12v, you still may be able to tell - the 24v wiring system was pretty heavily integrated into the underhood 12v system. basically it's a rat's nest.

also, there'd have been a hole cut in the grill for the NATO slave receptical. it basically looks like a giant male DC plug end.

and, sure enough, by '86 the army was well on it's way in phasing out manual shifted vehicles. every CUCV i've ever seen had the TH400 auto behind it. i've never seen an OD green 6.2 Cheby w/ a stick.

there's many more signs. basically, it's hard for a military truck to look like a civvy truck again.

i'd put my $ that it is not a military truck.

and, btw, are we SURE that it has an overdrive?? i mean, if it had real tall gears in it, like 3.08s or something, then L,1,2,3 sure would seem more like 1,2,3,OD. right?

Re: how rare is this?

GM did have a lighter duty 4 speed overdrive tranny that they used back in the late 80's.

Have you actually confirmed that it is an OD trans? Easiest way would be to jack up the read axle and mark the drive shaft then give the engine one 360 deg turn from TDC to TDC on the front pulley (with the tranny in OD). My experience with 20+ year old vehicles is that stuff can get changed around a good bit....what you see ain't always what you get

Could it be a shift knob (or even a tranny) from another truck?

Keep us posted, if it is an original OD it would be pretty rare.

Re: how rare is this?

yeah I would check and make sure it's OD for sure, try and get some #'s off the tranny or jack it up and check the revs. someone could have just changed the knob...

Re: how rare is this?

Yes chevy actually made this tranny I had one a few years back. I've only seen one of them and heard of two others yours and another guys. So the tranny in this truck truck makes it pretty rare.
