Ok So I'm looking at a 97 TDI jetta that I found on craigslist, And Im trying to get a few pointers on what to look for, And what to expect

also any bodys opinion on the price which is $2500 5spd 174k miles

It has had a few fender benders, But has been professionally repaired
Has a few new parts, looks clean..1997 Jetta TDI - $2500

What are some commom problems you might see with this year? any bad things about OBS TDI jettas ?

i had a 98 beetle with the tdi and a 5 speed. great little car, lots of power and 50 mpg. the thing would run 100mph all day long, up hill or down it didnt care. had a few problems;

brakes, rear always wear out prematurely.

mafs, (mass air flow sensor?)keep a spare in the car. when it goes out it puts the car in limp home mode. no power, real drag. sometimes you can clean the temp probe and it will work again. basically its a heating element and a temp sensor, from the temp the computer can determine the amount of air flow. more air lower temp.....

window switches are junk, but easy to replace.

return lines on injectors leak and car smells like raw diesel. they are like vacuum tube, get old, dry out, whatever, and no clamp just slip over barb fitting. just replace them and go on. save the fiberglass insulating sleeve, without it the heat will soften the rubber and they will start leaking again.

the oil filter is a cartridge type , like a 6.0 powerstroke. not a problem but messy to change. also the oil gets black instantly, tryed all types nothing really helped.

change the timing belt if it hasent been done recently. good for 60k iirc?

over all the're great, id own one again.
hope this helps.

Mahalos Vanboy does help indeed, Luckily the TDI club guys replied too so I have a full checklist to go through when I see the car

Im excited, This is going to be alot of fun I think, Except its going to take money from the truck, I kind of want a little autocross/DD grocery getter, so going to get some injectors, do some suspension mods, See what kind of fun we can have

Just bought a 2005 TDI GLS 5 speed 3 days ago. It has 125K, complete highway miles on it. Had a VW diesel specialist do a complete inspection on it before I bought it. I have done a lot of research on the TDI before buying one. They are truly amazing cars. Needed one to complement my 2000 F-350 powerstroke as well (for my wife actually).

Like the power strokes, the TDI engine will last almost forever if you are very diligent with your oil changes and maintenance. The Ford power stoke is a great towing powerhouse and the TDI VW is an efficiency power house. It is also very smooth and quite compared to the Ford diesels. Easy to get 50 MPG hwy. With both vehicles you have the best of both worlds. Good luck with it
