If the 24V system is working and you had it running that way, might be better to leave it be.
I've got a 3020 w/ the 24V system and so far all is fine w/ it. Bad batteries are what kills those starters. I hate to say, but the John Deere batteries (Hibernators) are damned good. I got 5 years out of a set on a tractor that gets used very little. Make sure the cables are clean and not corroded inside. If the lights were hacked before, that might be an issue, if you use the tractor at night. I think most of them had the power drawn from one of the two batteries, so one was always good while one was drawn down from the lights.
It's not hard to convert it over. There are 'kits' but anyone w/ a basic knowledge can do it.
