Mixed unleaded fuel with diesel fuel

Accidently added unleaded fuel (6 gals) before I realized it. Topped off with diesel fuel (24 gals). What do I do?

How much was in the tank to start? What kind of vehicle is it? At that ratio, if you throw in a couple of bottles of diesel additive (for lubricity) you'll probably be OK. If you have a brand new high-tech diesel and especially if you have a 6.0L Powerstroke with its finicky injectors, I'd lean more towards pumping the tank out and starting over again with nothing but diesel... but that would have been easier before adding the final 24 gallons!

Long ago and far away in the time of crude early diesels, throwing some gasoline in the tank was a common winter anti-gel trick in really cold areas. I'm not saying it was any wiser back then than it is now, just that it's feasible for a diesel engine to survive burning off dilute amounts of gasoline in its fuel.

Try not to involve your dealer in whatever you decide to do.

Re: Mixed unleaded fuel with diesel fuel

There was approximately 1/8 of a tank before I put the unleaded in. It is a Ford F250 and has a 6.0L Powerstroke engine. I added 2 32oz. bottles of diesel Kleen Power Service brand to get home.

I've heard there are baffles in the tank, do you know if I can siffen the fuel or do I need to drop the tank? Would you recommend flushing the injectors?

Thanks for your input.

Re: Mixed unleaded fuel with diesel fuel

Drain the tank. Your fuel injectors will thank you !!!
