Which new diesel to buy????

Im looking to replace my current 86 F350 diesel. Im gonna go new, 3/4 ton, long bed, diesel. It will be primarily a commuter and need to pull an 8000 pound camper. On looks alone I prefer a Silverado, but Im looking for your experiences........not lookin to start a war, just experience with what you know and have.....

Re: Which new diesel to buy????

I have a superduty an theres nothing like it. It has way more interior room then Chevy an physically a bigger truck. If your 86 diesel has treated you well why would you want to change brands. The superduty truck is the best lookin truck on the road. Stick with Ford you wont be dissaaponted. If its not a Ford its not a truck. Chevy is just a car in a truck body.

Re: Which new diesel to buy????

I would go with the chevy or gmc at this time. The fords are going to have a new unproven engine same with dodge but I would take the dodge out of those two. You just have to research the trucks avalible. As far as the old truck treating you well so just go buy a new one. I had a 95 ford that was a great truck. Then I got a 97 and had nothing but trouble with it. I have no brand loyalty anymore.

Re: Which new diesel to buy????

This topic has come up many times on here. Read through old topics in general diesel and you will come up with tons of reading. You can also do some research on the Dodge and Chevy sites. You will find that most owners of all the makes are happy with their trucks. Finding the truck that suits you best is best left up to you.

Re: Which new diesel to buy????

gives you some idea: we own an oil company, with that being said, we have dodge, chevy, gmc, and ford diesels.

Mileage Report:
fords: 37k-92k 6.0L diesel
dodges: 32k-84k 5.9L diesel
chevys: 10k-40k 6.6L diesel
gmcs: 2k-20k 6.6L diesel

NONE have been in the shop for anything other than maintance. with that being said, you must realize our guys drive these trucks 24/7 from location to location and NEVER turn them off!! Also, keep in mind that is probably because none of them have ever been chipped/tuned.

it is mostly just what YOU want.

Want a great ride & ALOT of power? - Chevy/GMC
Want a good ride & power at luxury? - Ford
Want a good grunt & power all through the band? - Dodge

Like i said, it is all in what YOU want. If there is anything i can help you with, please PM me.

Re: Which new diesel to buy????

Solid front axle. Excellent ground clearance. 2 things that GMs do not have. Ken I guarantee you if you drove as superduty for a day as well as a GM an Dodge. Youd pic the Ford hands down. I want you to try them all out before you make a decision. Ask the superduty guys personally how they like there trucks. Thats a good way to find out the lowdown. Good Luck

Re: Which new diesel to buy????

I came from a 250 to my current 06 LBZ, I really don't understand why all of you always put down the independent front suspension? It rides better, handles better. Sure if you go mud boggin the solid front axle is better, but for most of us that use it for daily driving and towing, it really doesn't matter. I am a home builder and am always offroad on job sites.

Re: Which new diesel to buy????

I bet you miss that 250 though. Where i use my truck a solid axle is must. Solid axle will give you better stability with loads. The new superdities 2005 on up ride great an have excellent turning radius.

My current truck has the luxury (heated power leather seats, six disc changer, Infinity Sound system) and nice ride too, although it is a single rear wheel 3500. I test drove a dually and it was too rough for me on the freeways. The Cummins provides more than enough power for me and my toys I tow around.

BTW, not to knock the Super Duties, but the dashboard in them always looked to me like it belonged in a work truck, not a $50,000 truck designed for the general public. The interior seems bland overall although the crew cab has more space than my quad cab Dodge. I would have liked to have the Dodge styling with the Ford's space, but I guess you can't have it all. Oh, a six speed automatic would have been nice too.

Re: Which new diesel to buy????

You can have it all... mega cab Dodge.

Too big for me. After driving a crewcab Ford for several years, the quad cab fit the bill perfectly. Bigger than extended cabs from GM and Ford... big enough for a full grown adult in any seat, front or back.

Dodge does need to up its payload ratings and offer a longbed megacab truck.

Re: Which new diesel to buy????

i must say i have to agree with you mike. the pre mega cab dodge fit the bill for me as well.enough room for adults in the back,an 8ft bed,and still not but a few inches longer than the supercab trucks i normally buy. a full blown 4dr truck is a pain to drive daily,a megacab with a short box is useless to me because of the short box,and would be way to long with a 8ft bed.add the 6.0 issues, and the unwillingness for ford to deal, the dodge just made sense.
