Series 60 Detroit

Hey guys, I was wondering if you could help me out with a question.
I just bought a yard truck to move trailers around at our trucking company. It is a 1994 Freightliner with a 60 series detroit, but it is a 11.1 Liter. All I am familiar with is the 12.7 liter.

What is the difference between the two?
Can you take a crank and rods from a 12.7 and put in a 11.1 and everything be cosher since the are supposed to be the same blocks?

Any info on the differences and simularities will be greatly appreciated.

A good example is if I take the engine out of this truck and put a 12.7 crank and rods, since the bore is the same and have a short block sitting in case a motor goes down in one of my trucks, will I be able to take everything else off the other motor and put it on this one and be in good shape?

Thanks in advance

Re: Series 60 Detroit

I have been told that a 11.1L can be upgraded to a 12.7 with the right parts. The 11.1, 12.7, and 14.0 are physically the same size externally.

I probably wouldn't waste the time upgrading a 11.1 to a 12.7 and instead just get a 12.7 out of a wrecked truck.

Re: Series 60 Detroit

I don't think the 11.1 is the same external size, but I could be wrong. 11.1 is sereis 50 the other two are series 60.

Re: Series 60 Detroit

Series 50 is only a 4 cylinder, basically a 12.7 Series 60 cut to 4 cylinders. The 14.0L, IIRC, is only available with DDEC V.

As for changing a 11.1 to a 12.7, I believe it can be done, but not sure exactly what parts would have to be changed out to make it all work. I would think at least the cylinder kits, and possibly crankshaft and camshaft.

Re: Series 60 Detroit

does the truck run good? if it's only gonna be used to move trailers around, why would you want to go throught the expense and hassle of swapping engines?? what is the HP rating of the 11.1L?

Re: Series 60 Detroit

Since it is an older engine obviously since they don't make the 11.1L anymore there are a few differences between the 2. Just a few major ones in fact. Crankshaft,rods,pulse-wheel gear, turbo, oil cooler, cylinder kits, injectors, camshaft, to name a few. As for the comment on the block, basically the same, just different size liners/piston dome. So if you really wanted to just change the parts over from 1 BLOCK to the other one. Don't forget the programs in the computer are different also. Yes, the swap would be ok except that the transmission might not hold up to the torque, and radiator might not cool as needed.

No, there is a Series 60 11.1L. I do not have a Series 50.

I just looked at the serial number sticker last night and it plainly says 1995, Series 60, and 11.1L on it.

Re: Series 60 Detroit

I stand to be corrected on 2 points, 1- they might have the same piston assenblies,2- the large gear in frount of the engine we call the 'bull gear' is different. FWIW, there are 7 major differences in the 11.1 to the 12.7.

Re: Series 60 Detroit

I thought possibly using it as a yard dog for a while and rebuilding it as a 12.7 to put in another truck if one went down.
I thin this one is 325 or 350, I looked but I cant remember. One of the two

Re: Series 60 Detroit

Most Series 11.1 engine had the 320 hp in the computer, there were 350 programs and a few had a 365 hp program. Do NOT use the rocker cover for hp info, the ecm has the program inside and this where you have to look. DO NOT believe the sales man if he points this to you. What is inside is what counts not what is stated on the outside.

That is the bull gear. Money is on that you don't have a torque wrench to tighten the nut. Shop has the tool but not the wrench. I'm thinking over 1K in torque. You need to go to a someone who has the gear assembly. Do that. Also get the sensors, front seal, oil pan gasket, special gasket eliminator, ect. Also make sure that the covers are in good shape on the R side. Now is the time to replace anything bad. Money it will cost but the truck makes you money when it's running. Usually the shops quote around 16 hrs labor. Volvo's run a little more due to the radiator package ect. neded for removal. Did you bend any valves?

I Got A 60 Series Detroit And Have A Overheating Issue. The Codes Are Saying Fuel Temp Sensoe And Coolant Temp Sensor. I Just Got The Heads, Rods, Liners All Done And Now This. The Temp Gauge Stays On 150 And Then Suddenly Goes To 230-240 For A Split Second And Then Back Down To 150. The Truck Is Old 1998 Freightliner Cc But There Is No Leaks. Any Feedback Will Be Greatly Appreciated
