Re: ULSD Fuel

I guess my early 99 must be an anomaly. My fuel mileage is better and the truck runs the same. I am concerned about lubricity however so I guess some Standyne is in order.

Re: ULSD Fuel

What about Biodiesel fuel as a primary source of fuel...anyone have some thoughts. I use about 100 gallons of regular diesel per week/with diesel kleen, just curious how the motor would handle the switch?

stateboy776, I'm with you on the Howes, darn truck is quiet to say the least. And yes I have fallen victim to the leaking fuel drain o-rings all ready. My Dealership says he carries at least 80 in stock all the time do to the unexpected call for the parts. In his word "the drain valves are dropping like flies".

See ya,

Re: ULSD Fuel

Since ultra low fuel has hit the market I contacted Marvel Mystery Oil who recommended 4 ounces to 10 gallons of fuel. I find Marvel Mystery Oil more readily available than Howes. However, after reading about Howes, I will try that product.

Re: ULSD Fuel

I have a 01-7.3 and use to get high 18's to 20 before the new fuel came out. I have 3.73 gears and auto. I now get about 3 mpg less. I run a about 8 ounces of marvel mistery oil each fill up.

Re: ULSD Fuel

I have not noticed any remarkable difference in fuel mileage since the UL fuel hit the market.
I did replace my CPS last week with one from International rather than Ford.
I was reading in these blogs about how the International model is better. The engine had been hiccupping for a couple of months so I thought I would replace the CPS. I did and have not noticed any difference in fuel mileage at all.
However, on cooler morning starts, the engine used to lope and sometimes quit if I did not wait for the glowplugs to heat up. The ole 7.3 has not had this problem since replacing the CPS. Does it run quieter as some blogs indicate??? I don't think so, it just starts easier.
I inspected the old Ford CPS and compared it to the new blue International one, the International model had far superior magnetism. It would almost pick up a 3/4" combination wrench, the Ford model was much much weaker. So, its my thought that the computer is receiving a much stronger, cleaner signal than before.
I have not yet been able to locate any Howes fuel treatment so am continuing the Marvel Mystery Oil at the 4 oz to 10 gallon ratio.

A personal favorite mixture of mine that I have used for the past 8 months with sucess is 20 Oz of Power Service mixed with 20oz of Marvel Mystery oil and 1 Quart of two stroke (injector quality). I usually mix these up ahead of time and have several containers in my truck at all times.

[/ QUOTE ]

Funny you should mention this mixture- it was one recommended to me by an old Ford diesel mechanic at the dealership I bought my first Excursion at, and I used it religiously in that truck. I used this mixture as well in my VW TDI- I was running free JetA (we sumped the heck out of the tanks daily on the corporate jet fleet I maintained-part of the daily preflights- but there's no lubricity in JetA)
I never had a lick of trouble with that TDI the whole time I owned it-it got around 44mpg. One of the pilots had a TDI and was running the JetA with ATF- he had injector problems in rather short order and went to the mix I was using (after VW raped him on the repairs).
I could tell a BIG difference on the Ex the one or two times I didn't have that mix with me to put in the fuel. I'm using it now on the '02 Ex we just purchased with no problems so far.

Re: ULSD Fuel

I have seen no problems with my truck, just towed a 6000lbs boat to Canada up and back mileage was great went 451miles each way and burned a tank of gas each way.80k on the truck so far.

I may us some 2 stroke just for lubing purpose, but why fix something that is not broken.

Re: ULSD Fuel

I am not about to blame ULSD for any problem with my truck, not that I have seen anything that I can relate to fuel. I've been using it for one full year in my personal vehicle. Winter mileage seemed to be about the same as when we had low sulfur fuel. This summer I am back to 18.5 mpg and I still have yet to see any leaking fuel lines, etc. Granted, local regions will vary with fuel quality and content, but I cannot say that we have seen all the horror stories that sprouted up over a year ago over ULSD. Reminds me of the days when leaded gasoline was replaced with unleaded.

From a commercial or heavy industrial point, we have been using ULSD for about 1-1/2 years on over 300 pieces of diesel equipment without any fuel related issues. Our environmental manager is happy because the MDEQ is happy in that they did not measure any measurable amounts of SO2 in our air last year during an environmental audit and compared it to the same audit from 5 years ago. ULSD is making a difference, after all, it's about cleaner air.

Last summer we ran a B20 bio-diesel blend with #2 ULSD as the base fuel. By the time winter got here, we were on straight #2 ULSD. In April we increased our bio-diesel blend to B50 with #2 ULSD. This is all from federal mandates to clean up our air from diesel engine emissions.

Great information people. I have an '03 7.3 F350, is the ULSD fuel going to create problems with my truck?
