What engine in a 1980 Ford C-8000 fire truck?

Just picked up a 1980 Ford C-8000 Fire truck from a local fire department... Does anyone know what motor these use? Its got an allison auto... Its a cabover style, very nice shape, only 20,000mi. I'm still figuring out how to tilt the cab so I can look things over..... Thanks

If it's a diesel most likely you have a Cat 3208 or 3208T. Seems to me the Detroit 8.2 "Fuel Pincher" was also offered for a year or two but I've never seen one.

A gasser would have a 391 (or larger) Ford V8.

----

Regarding the tilt cab we had a similar early 70's 10-wheel farm dump. That one had two large cab latch handles at the rear of the cab on the passenger side. To tilt you'd operate both handles together - one operates the main latch, the other a secondary "safety catch" - while giving an upward heave on the cab. The cab would then tilt forward with miminal effort. (There's a pair of big honking counterbalance springs beneath the cab that provide most of the lifting force.)

Suggestion: Remove everything loose inside the cab before you flip it!!

(Incidentally farm dump had the 391 gas V8. The rate at which it consumed fuel was absolutely terrifying!)

If it's diesel, then the most likely one is a Cat 3208 or 1160.

Could be a 92 series 2 cycle also. Hate2 engines were to small hopefully for your sake. If it is a hate2, junk the engine and replace it with a clatterpillar.

Having driven an early '80's vintage F-700 single axle tractor with the 8.2 I have to laugh at Your comment......but agree 100%.....They were a worthless POS even when they were brand new. I'd hate to try to keep one running now after 25 yrs!

Does it have an extended cab? If so tilting can be a challenge, as the springs are usually not strong enough. If it is a standard cab then it's pretty easy, there is a big over center handle that releases the main cab lock, then two smaller ones made out of rod to form handles that you pull to release safeties on the way up. Sometimes it takes a little bouncing and pulling different handles to get it to go up.

Well, if you get the cab open, you'll be able to tell. IF it's a Cat, it will say 3208 and usually be painted yellow. The early 3208's were actually renamed to the Ford designation, 646 something... it is a 10.4L engine and I think 646 is the cubic inches.... And I think painted blue.

If you look under it, if it's the 3208, the starter will be on the passenger side (mine is) and it will have a dual oil filter up toward the driver front.
