General DieselDiscussion about diesels in general. All brands are welcome, please refrain from brand wars. Discussions about types of diesel fuel also go here.
Last week diesel in El Paso was $1.99. In one day it jumped to $2.06. It stayed there until today when it jumped to $2.11. That is a .12 increase in just 2 increases in one week. What is going on here? Yeah, I'm happy with my 6.0, but this is rubbing a nerve. Yes, this may be cheaper than what some are paying, but that is a huge increase in such a short time. Done venting.

Ours went from $1.83 to $2.55 in two weeks. Price has jumped everyother day. I think its $2.70 some place in Washington.
This really sux. Good thing I have a Geo metro to drive to work.

No real excuse for the high diesel prices other than supply, demand, and greedy oil companies. The cost of fuel oil has risen quite a bit, but not enough to justify $2.55/gallon in Washington. The surprising thing is that I live in an isolated area that is supplied by the same trucks. The diesel at the closest Safeway is $2.34/gallon, but 4 miles away (same supplier and truck) the price is $2.55/gallon at Safeway. What is wrong with that picture?
Check out this link for the current price. Today's average price for #2 fuel oil (heating) is $1.4914/gallon.

I noticed that too. I found a place for 1.89 and went back the next day to find 2.05. Wonder what is going on???

dantheman12 IT'S CALLED A WAR IN IRAQ Remember in 1974 when fuel was in short supply and the price went up. Once the war in VietNam was over the price stabilized. Maybe we need this war to end. Let's hope so before we lose to many more lives.

Here's something I heard a few evenings ago on CNBC, and it makes sense.
We've gone through a number of 'sea changes' in the petroleum markets in the past: 1973 Arab oil embargo, 1978 Iranian revolution, etc.
But now, we're in the middle of a "double whammy" sea change:
1. The dollar's value has dropped a lot in past year against other world currencies. All oil is sold in dollars and the market has just adjusted for the fall in value of the dollar. Makes sense. Same thing is happening to electronic hardware from Far East....prices which were always falling stopped falling to account for falling dollar value.
2. The world demand for petroleum has finally caught up to capacity. Saudi Arabia can't pump any more oil than it's now doing. There just ain't no spare capacity in the world...and the law of supply and demand has now kicked in with a vengeance. Oil, in the future, will be a bit scarce and the price of scarce commodities goes only one way...UP.
I believe your choices are: 1. Pay up. OR 2. Do without.
Or you can do with less. So we may be wise to, in addition to our diesel pickups, own a 50cc Honda motorcyle for the short trips.
Having been in both situations, I MUCH PREFER to have the option of getting fuel at higher prices than the option of having lower prices, but not being able to get it when I want it. (Next truck will be a dually with 100 gal transfer tank in bed...giving me a range of about 2,000 miles.)
Or....those crooks at the oil companies have gotten together and fixed prices. I still think the first two reasons are true and they will be with us from now on. My prayer: "Oh Lord, let the diesel fuel and Social Security last as long as I do."
I believe those generations who come after us will have to make some radical shifts in life-style or technology or maybe both.

The War in Iraq has some to do with it, but not much. Demand has more to do with it. Supply as well.
Nobody wants an oil refinery built next to them. Everyone goes to the zoning and wetlands meetings, trying to shoot down every project of this type. On top of this, the same people join The Sierra Club (and others), trying to shut down all the older, "dirty" plants and refineries because asthma is on the increase. In short, we can't have nuclear because of radiation, we can't have water power because dams are bad for fish, we can't have coal because of the soot, we can't drill for oil here because it'll hurt bearcubs in Alaska or plankton off the coast of Louisiana, we can't put windmills off the coast of Cape Cod because Ted Kennedy's view from his compound would suffer (true story, btw), we can't burn trash to make energy, we can't dump it in the ocean, we can't bury it underground anymore, blah blah blah. You get the picture.
In short, we won't allow anything anymore because some group says it'll negatively affect somebody.
That's the truth. If we all don't change soon, get used to our current situation.
