Where is the Cummins engine??? 6.4?

Everywhere I go I hear that Dodge is going to their sister company Mercedes for truck diesels soon. And that Ford is switching to Cummins, maybe even as soon as the 6.4L. I heard this from dealers and aftermarket tuners.

Re: Where is the Cummins engine??? 6.4?

The 6.4 is made by International Truck and Engine Corp... Just as the 7.3 and the 6.0 before it. Ford is tied to IH for several more years. I seriously doubt you will EVER see an F250-350 come from the factory with a Cummins engine in it.

As for the rumor that Dodge is going to switch to the Mercedes, well, I doubt that one too, but since Daimler Chrysler owns both companies, it's certainly more plausible than Ford switching to Cummins.

Ford owns some part of Cummins I believe. I hear Ford is tired of the warranty losses of the 6L and is giving IH the boot.

Yet another false rumor that will not die.... Ford DOES NOT own Cummins.....

I am sure Ford is tired of the warranty issues, but they are contractually tied to IH for several more years and Cummins is contractually tied to Dodge for several more years as well. For Ford and Cummins to do business would require them to first break their current contracts and then enter into one together. Now, I'm no lawyer, but the way I see it, for them to do this would leave the door open to lawsuits by Dodge and IH that would probably break them.

Re: Where is the Cummins engine??? 6.4?

How much longer will Ford put up with the 6-liter engine problems? Ford is
going into the 4th model year with the 6.0-L in the PSDs and there are still
problems: Some are new problems and some are old problems. If the 6.4-L
engine is a bored out 6.0-L, then presumably many of these problems will
carry forward. Except for the turbo, since they're dumping the EVRT
turbo. Probably have a new set of turbo problems with the 6.4-L...
Ford just doesn't seem to do adequate pre-production testing of new
products. E.g., the EGR on the 2005 6.0-L is responsible for many problems.

Yesterday I was cleaning up around here and came across the Ford
"Powerstroke Powertrain Updates" by David M. Johnson, Program Manager -
Diesel Engines at Ford. I don't remember when this came out. Probably
in 2003. Anyway, I was thumbing through it looking at all the claims for
improvements, including: Improved Durability (250,000-miles) &
Reliability, Refined Noise & Vibration, Pilot Injection (reduced idle
noise!!!), EVRT Turbo for Aggressive Low-End Torque (six speeders
gotta love this one), Joint & Seal Improvements (guess they're still
working on the rear-main seal!!!), Improved Serviceability (remember
this the next time you drain your water in fuel HCFM thingie), the
5-speed tranny with Tow/Haul, improved reliability and durability
(well, this is probably still true relative to the 4R100)...

Ford might want to check their current 6.0-L engine against their
published claims... Hopefully, the 6.4-L will do better.

Also, did you see the May sales figures for the top ten trucks over on
http://www.pickuptruck.com/html/otf0999.html? Ford F-series sales were
DOWN 5.8% YTD, Chevy Silverado was up 19.0% YTD, and GMC Sierra was up
28.3% GM actually sold more Chevy Silverados in May (109,359) than Ford
sold F-series (72,485). I'm not sure if that was due to the GM employee
discount or not. I thought that discount kicked in on June 1st for
everybody, but maybe it was in May?

Re: Where is the Cummins engine??? 6.4?

I believe that Ford will have or already has a "Cat" motor in the 550's and 650's. Maybe there is some confusion here on what motor is in, or going into what Model Ford truck.

Re: Where is the Cummins engine??? 6.4?

Ford has offered for several years the PowerStoke diesel (stock), the Cummins B5.9 (optional upgrade), or the Cat 3126B (optional upgrade)in the F650 and F750 trucks.

Re: Where is the Cummins engine??? 6.4?

6.OL took years and millions to develop no doubt. Every new design especially with all the requirements for better milage/less polution increase complexity. No human on this planet can test every EVENTUALITY in a lab or on a test track. YOU are the lab rat for every product you use. Every new product has issues. Yes, even Japanese :-)

Perhaps if Ford built its own diesels they could get problems resolved quicker. Try working in the corporate world a few years and see why this aint so. Try developing software a few years and understand why bugs exist and this stuff is just insidiously complex. Its amazing half the stuff we live with works at all. Look at F16s - no two are alike.

I am frustrated as anyone because I HAVE JUST PUT OFF BUYING a Ford F250 diesel because they need time to get all these issues worked out. But why on earth would Ford dump millions invested? Its cheaper just to keep working to tweak the engine, which is basically a good platform from what I have read here over the past three years (I don't post much...)

Yeah, I'm pissed at Ford but have faith they'll get IH to get this engine right. All the issues I've read about now appear to be posted as TSBs. Its just plain naive to float rumours that they'll jump ship to Cummins or whatever for the SD. Work in the corporate world and you'll realize things just don't work that way. Quit blowing smoke, please.

You can get a BRAND NEW FORD WITH A CUMMINS right now! Fitted from the factory! Just gotta figure out how to import it! You see they put a DEPENDABLE engine in a pickup for the countries that do not have all the skilled mechanics we have to work on them!! Re: Where is the Cummins engine??? 6.4?

We use F-800s at work and they have a Cummins engine. We also have a couple Chevy 7500s and I believe they have the 3126 Cat. My boats at work have the 3126 Marine version and they are pushing 470hp at 2950rpms. The Cat is a great engine.

Re: Where is the Cummins engine??? 6.4?

The reason the Cummins rumor never dies is because people WANT TO believe it. Ford builds an excellent truck, but these IH engines are junk. There is no doubt in my mind that the Ford marketing guys read these forums. How many times do they have to read "Sick Litre" and "Ford owns Cummins" to get the message that we want a good, reliable straight six engine in these trucks ?

I'm tired of V8 diesels. If Ford thinks I am going to buy a largely untested twin turbo 6.4L V8 diesel in 2007, they've got another thing coming. I'm taking this issue into my own hands...

Have you noticed how Cummins brags about their engine testing when they release an engine ? They say things like "tested for 4000 hours at WOT". I never hear IH making the same claims. Hmmm.... makes ya think...

Re: Where is the Cummins engine??? 6.4?

cummins superduty. I love my V8 and would hate to have a 6, thats what jap cars are for. If you hate IH so much, why did you sign up for a site that is for Ford diesels. I suggest you go to the turbo diesel registry so you can be with your own group of peers. They love the cum-apart engiens their. So did you just come on here to talk bad about ford diesels or do you actually have a purpose?

Re: Where is the Cummins engine??? 6.4?

Look at my name, buddy. I drive a Ford. It just aint going to have no V8 diesel in it for much longer... you can't beat the truck, but you sure can beat the engine.

"Cum apart" ? This coming from a 6L owner ?
