Re: You'll love this one

I made a living selling some cars while in college. I knew about cars and what people wanted.

I love it when people try to know more than I do. I re-state my request once, and then politely let them know they just lost a sale and to go get someone else to help me.

Re: You'll love this one

Ive met some very knowledgable salesman but like great mechanics they are few and far between.
Ive heard rediculous things from both camps. Ford owner told me his psd was a twin turbod cat. Dodge owner tried for a half hour to convince me the auto in his 01 was a 5 speed. Ford owner told me cummins was a 2 stroke so he would never own one. Just to name a few. Car salesman really do come up with some off the wall ones tho. Ive heard some whoppers. A carsalemans worst enemy is an educated consumer. An uneducated consumer is a dealerships bread and butter. Sticker plus baby.

Re: You'll love this one

Stopped at local Ford dealer the other day to get some coolant additive. While waiting for the parts counter line to shorten a bit I wondered outside to peek inside an '08 F-450. I wasn't outside 30 seconds when this big goon with a big goofy grin and a name tag waddles up to me. He starts asking all the standard BS questions about me, blah blah blah. (I am concentrated on how clean the undercarriage is ) Then he starts pointing out the different "little things" on the truck. First the vents on the fenders...."These are a new addition....cold air intakes"...I didn't say anything....Points inside..."This year the truck feature a new 6 speed automatic"...I kept quiet....We get to the back and he points to the exhaust tip..."With this new powerstroke engine Ford added this dual tip with the cutouts to help with the noise and smell of the diesel motor"....I said thank you and walked away chuckling....

Re: You'll love this one

Great post! I hate it when some idiot starts lecturing me about things that they obviously know nothing about. After about 1 minute, I loose my "mr. niceguy" personna and get blunt with them or I just walk away and ask someone else the original question and leave the first guy hanging. I have better things to do with my time than listen to their inane drivel.

As an aside, the next time I have to buy a truck of any size (bigger than a half ton), I'm going to have a chat with the folks at Kenworth. I suspect their sales folks know their trucks pretty well. In fact, Sun_s (a member here) sells them, and he DOES know his stuff. As far as cost goes, I've got the price of a decent new Semi Tractor into my Excursion anyway, and at 117,000 miles, it's broken down again. So far, that makes 2.5 years out of the last 7.
Just my $.02 worth.

Re: You'll love this one

i cant believe i forgot this, same day. the reason i was there to start with was a salesman called me from there because he saw my ad in autotrader, wanted to know if i was selling for an upgrade or what. after he told me where he was from i told him i was already in touch with someone there about a 450, he said o well kelly is here and there is a 450, i said id come down and he would let him know. when i was leaving the guy that called stopped me and asked about my ad, (400+hp at wheels, 4"straight pipe have stock cat) he said so now which motor did you pick? it has the caterpillar diesel in it, i said no its straight piped, i have the cat-alytic converter incase someone wants it installed when they buy it. he said o that cat diesel would have been something. i said there isnt one.

Re: You'll love this one

Around here the sales folks are pretty knowledgable about trucks as they sell 80% trucks and 20% cars.

Re: You'll love this one

I refuse to even talk to someone in retail sales!

I either talk to the fleet salesman or they can talk to the wall.

If I wanted to buy a focus i would look for some grease ball with a name tag and a bad haircut. But for trucks I talk to the Fleet salesman. as a bonus they usually cut much better pricing that the floor sales vulture would even think about taking to the manager.

Re: You'll love this one

This reminds me of when I was Excursion shopping. One dealer said, "Why do you want an Excursion, a pick up will work just fine". In other words, "We don't have any but we've got plenty of pick ups". He didn't seemed fazed that I pulled up in a truck.

Another dealer once tried selling me a used Super Duty with $1K in body damage for $2K over NADA value.

Another dealer tried selling me a new at the time Super Duty and after hearing lie after lie realized he had been drinking.
