2005 Escape ABS/4wd Light

Evening folks, and thanks in advance. I am trying to help a friend with a 2005 Ford Escape, fulltime AWD, auto, 3.0 V6, 4 wheel ABS. The vehicle exhibits absolutely no driveability problems, but it has a constant ABS light and an intermittent flashing 4WD light.

I have bled the brakes until clear fluid at all four corners. Also, new pads and rotors were installed 2 months ago, also at all wheels, by a stealership in WVa..

My Actron scanner will not read ABS codes, my SCT X3 also shows nothing. The ABS works even though the light is on, and the 4WD worked perfectly running it through the mudhole we tested it in. I am thinking a VSS is faulty giving the computer bad info. Am I on the right course? Any suggestions?

I would start by scanning each system with a GOOD scan tool that can read the codes. With all those lights on there are several codes stored. Without the codes the best anyone can do is guess.

Thanks Mark. I'm somewhat educated guessing myself. I can't afford the Auto Enginuity just yet, but I'm saving for it. I told him the best thing he can do is eat an hour of diagnostic time at an actual FORD dealer. I learned today that he had it worked on at the Kia dealer from which he bought it used. I am not as familiar with this platform as I am with pickups, but I am thinking the rear VSS has failed. If it's located in the differential, like on my truck, wouldn't a difference in front to rear speeds seen by the computer cause this?

Seems reasonable, but I don't know how the ABS system sets codes. Maybe it works like that....

You need to get the dealer to pull the codes.

Offer to pay them 30 bucks or so just to hook up the WDS and pull codes (from all systems) and and print any applicable service bulletins for you.

That's the plan CTO. I lost most of my connections when I quit working for Advance Auto, and my dealer of choice was among them. Unfortunately, he's more broke than the ten commandments. I floated him the money for the diagnostic, and if his wife will let it sit still long enough to get the scan done, I'll post the results. Our thanks to you and Mark.
