'91 Jetta Diesel Experience?

Hi All, this Saturday my son is looking at a '91 Jetta, diesel, 5-speed with about 250,000 miles. Anyone have experience to share about these? Trouble spots to look for, good websites or forums? Thanks for any help, Paul.

Make sure he finds out when the timing belt was changed out. When my 2003 came out, they improved the timing belt so that the recommended mileage between timing belt changes from 60k miles to 100k miles. And if you do the timing belt, you may as well change out the water pump and pulley tensioners while you are in there. And the website that Muntu pointed you to is about the best VW Diesel site out there.

fine out when the timing belt was last replaced--they are good for 60,000 on that car--h2o??? mine started to leak at 347,000--when you replace the belt--just look at the weep hole--and youll notice the reservoir going down--

Friend did the belt on his 2002 recently and the write ups on that site mentioned have you trying to find a computer to time the thing back right but he kept everything lined up and didnt need to do anything special. Not sure if 91 has the same setup but it saves money not needing the scan tool thing they wanted him to buy.

I thought the replacement belts, even for the older VW diesels, were good for 100k miles. That was what I was told at the NAPA parts store. I know for a fact the 2003 and up TDI's have 100k mile belt change intervals.

In the book, yes. Have him check with VW parts to see about the upgraded timing belt, good for 100k miles. With the exception of sticker price (my 2003 being cheaper), the only difference between my 2003 Jetta TDI sitting right next to a new 2002 Jetta TDI was that the 2003 came with the 100k belt, and the 2002 came with the 60k belt. I'm at 86k miles now, so I've bee keeping an eye on when I'm going to have to fork over the bucks for the water pump, belt tensioners, and belt.

Crowz, I stand corrected. Just called NAPA and they couldn't find any mileage recommendations for the belt changes for the older VW diesels, so his suggestion was to go by what the book says. I owe you a beer if you're ever in Baytown, Tx.

Works for me

Heck no problem there though. I know about zilch about diesels compared to most around here just learning as I go. My friend and I got into the diesel stuff about the same time. He sure loves his TDI.
