Same here in TN! You should see some of the POS cars and trucks on the road here!LOL
If you got an old title or BOS you can register anything you can push, pull, or tow!
Drive it like it was stolen!(it may have been)!

That's the only thing you can think of? Or the only thing you want to think of? I can easily come up with one more - the truck was once stolen, a different VIN put on it, and sold.
The only vehicles I've ever registered have been in Michigan. The only thing that was EVER inspected was if I had given them enough money. As long as I had a title that looked like it was signed by the previous owner, and enough $$$$, it was processed and I had a new title in my name. Nobody has EVER inspected a vehicle I was registering. </div></div>
That's right on, exactly what I was thinking. VIN switch.
You all have to remember that in most states, I can't say all, DMV's are fee collecting agencies. They do very little enforcement and it usually revolves around falisification of DL's or multiple DL's.

There is no "nice" way to arrest a potentially dangerous, combative suspect. The police are our bodyguards...our hired guns. We pay them to do the dirty work of protecting us; the things we're too afraid, to unskilled or too civilized to do ourselves. We expect them to keep the bad guys out of our businesses, our cars and houses and out of our face. We want them to "take care of the problem."
WE JUST DON'T WANT TO SEE HOW IT'S DONE.

I agree that the truck may well have been stolen. However since the O.P. wants to keep the truck, taking it to the government is the last thing to do. They will not "straighten it out" they will impound the truck and probably destroy it.
Inspections depend on the state. In Ohio they are only inspected if the vehicle has an out of state title. I found that out the hard way when I bought a tow truck from PA that had had the cab swapped and had not had a new VIN issued. I ended up cutting the truck up because there was no way to get proper title to it.

The title I had is transfered into my name, it passed emissions so Im good to go.. Neither one of the vins came up as stolen or rebuilt or anything thats why I ruled that out. Thanks for all the suggestions though
I bought a new truck off the lot, in 1987,paid cash, when I got the title
and registration it was 1 number off from the VIN.
It was a nightmare getting that straightened out. A huge headache
becuase some state worker made a typo.

I'm surprised that it would pass emissions, since that diesel engine would have to put out only the emissions that were allowed for the gas engine that it supposedly is according to the title.

Take a real close look at the dash VIN #, I know a person that used to make some from those plastic label makers and spray can them flat black and they did look good? Take a look at other S-10's near your year and look at how the numbers are attached to cowl, it should be 2 rivets that we can't get, not the everyday poprivet And as far as a diesel S-10 ? I think thats a clerical mistake and I don't think there was one ever made by Chevy.
I hope that was some help to you
Oh yeah and they were a handy little beater. I had one that I bounced around the farm in.
I REALLY MISS the old Ford RANGER diesel I had to, everyone complained about them but, it was good for running to town for parts, checking cows, etc.
