My daughter and son-in-law bought a house in the mountains outside Blue Ridge, Virginia, a few years back. When the land was cleared for the house and yard a bulldozer was used to push all the stumps and overburden to the bottom of the yard and left it in a pile. It looks like a pile of dirt covered by vegetation but I am sure it is filled with roots and stumps. The pile has been there for about 7 years and I'd like to get rid of it. The heaviest equipment I will have available is a large Skidloader/Bobcat. I'm hoping the stumps and roots will have decayed sufficiently that I will be able to break them up and move them with the dirt in the skidloader's bucket. If I can do this there is a nearby wash that I'd like to fill. What are the chances that the wood will be sufficiently decayed to break it up and move it with the dirt? BTW: I expect most of the stumps to be hardwood.

It might have, but it takes a long time for wood to rot while it is burried. My folks burried a bunch of stumps when they built their house in 86. it is now just starting to show a depression in the ground.....
Good luck.

My experience is that buried lumber (even treated) lasts about 1 year less than what you planned or needed it to. :-)
I think it depends on how wet/dry the area was, and whether any termites were able to do their job or not.

Fence posts usually rot within a few inches of grade as the rotting process requires air. Down a foot from grade the post is solid. Stumps buried at any depth will stay solid for a long time. Once unearthed, stumps are really hard to get rid of as they don't burn worth a darn and most landfills don't want them either. We bury all of our stumps as there's nothing else to do with them.

Unless the stumps are absolutely HUGE you ought to be able to move them with the skid whether they break or not. This past summer I dug out a maple stump for a client that the trunk was at least 2 1/2' in diameter that I was able to pick up and move with my Cat 248 skid. If you can't pick it up you ought to at least be able to shove it around, if that's not an option if you chain it up in the bucket you can lift an item that is way beyond the machine's rated capacity just a few inches.
