Calling All Electricians

I need to have my main panel on my 30 year old house replaced. It is a 200 amp main and mounted on the exterior of my house. Does anyone out there have a guess on how much this should cost? Any referrals in Fort Worth, TX?

Re: Calling All Electricians

Do have underground or OH electrical service?
What size was the old service?
Does the meter & socket need to be replaced? Will the meter socket (terminal) hold a large enough wire to feed a 200 amp panel?
($2500)

Re: Calling All Electricians

1. Underground
2. 200 amp
3. Do not know, but can't see why it would. / I think so since it has been 200 amp since new.

I am wanting to replace due to the box being 30 years old, it's an outside box, and I think I may have some loose breakers.

Re: Calling All Electricians

About $1000 if you buy the parts at Home Depot and do it yourself.
If not like BB said about $2500.
Call the city and the utility and find out if the Code has changed about the grounding required. You will need to probably set 2 ground rods six feet apart and bond the water and if you have it, gas.
You can also find out how much the permit will cost when you call the city. should take two electricians 3-6 hours to do.

Re: Calling All Electricians

Where I live you have to have a licensed electrician do the hook up to the Utility Company. Once the main feed is connected, you can do the rest yourself.

You only need two tools: WD-40 and Duct Tape. If it doesn't move and should, use the WD-40. If it shouldn't move and does, use the duct tape.

Re: Calling All Electricians

Just had mine updated from who knows what to 150amp. Had to use the inside old panel as a junction box and put the new main outside. Two eles about six hours and $2000.

Re: Calling All Electricians

I went through the same thing at my lake house 8 or 9 years ago. I had the power co-op run 200 amp service for 110 feet underground a new meter and meter box ($600), and the electrician charged me another $600 to pull out the old 100 amp box and install a 200 amp box and hook back up all the existing circuits. The electrician's price included the Cutler Hammer box and all the circuit breakers he needed. I was very, very pleased to get everything done for $1200. just my .02 cents worth.
