Camcorder digital...dvd

I am looking into recording some 45-60 minute sets of bluegrass music when I am at festivals I am involved in.
I have a new HP dou-core laptop and a 500GB USB drive.

I understand the 8GB mini discs will contain approx 30 minutes digital video. I need more capacity to record at least 1 show per disc.
Any ideas on what is the best way to do this?
can I record straight to the hard drive? do I need the Laptop to facilitate this recording, or will the camera have program features that will allow me to do this?
I need some help...dumber'n a rock on this stuff!

Re: Camcorder digital...dvd

It is possible to record straight to your hard drive, depending on what you are using for equipment to capture the event I imagine. If your camera has the capability to record to a remote device then it should work for you.Consider what it requires to use a webcam with your laptop using a mike to capture the sound part and substitute your camcorder for the webcam and mike.Your camera might interface with the computer differently but basically that is how it would be done.
I think the newer cams use firewire and the newer laptops have a firewire port on them but if that is not what you have then you will have to figure out what will work for you with what you do have.
I have found that with my camcorders at least that they will automatically shut down when the camera is on and it is not recording which would be the case for you if you were using it to record to your harddrive so you will need to find a way to address that if that will be a problem for you.I think about 5 minutes of camera on without recording will shut it down to save the battery. It is definately possible to do what you want to do,you just need to figure out what will work with what you have there.Have fun.Ron G

Re: Camcorder digital...dvd

My video camera has 30 gigabyte hard drive which will record 12 hours at the highest resolution setting.

That means you should get about 3 hours onto an 8 gig stick.

No you don't need a computer for anything. You can do everything with the camera minus burning it onto a DVD.

You can also get cameras that burn directly onto dvd.

My Camera has a 30 gigabyte hard drive with a slot for a memory stick so I can record onto either.

Transferring media from the camera or memory stick onto your computer is as easy as hooking it up. The camera will come with a DVD that has software to put onto your computer for storing and editing the videos.
