Can anyone answer this Question about a Detroit generator?

Can a detroit 353 Diesel 20kw 3 phase generator be used to run 460-3 phase. The specifications are as follows:

40 exciter volts, 230 volts, 62.7 amps, 1200 rpm, 25kva, 60 cycles, 1.0 exciter amps.

Serial number: 606-C-65

Model Number: E-5398

Thank you!

I am NOT a generator guy, BUT I have worked on a few of these generators. We actually tossed a load bank that I used for this unit. If my memory is still there I think that 230 was the max from this unit. We did a few changes on governors and changed a few to 120V. I don't remember any pictures in the boxes that allowed us to use 460V. Look at the wires spec's [if avail] and see if they list the wire routing needed for the 460V system. But don't plan on it. If I remember these had 'constant speed' governors and were made for 1 speed and 1 load. Useing these engines for say 5 or 6 house trailers will NOT work because of the varying load on the engine. Like I said 'constant speed' governors.

Have you tried putting 80 Volts on the exciter? That should double the output voltage, but whether the insulation and everything else is up to the task at 480 Volts is another question entirely.

A governor controls crankshaft speed, which in turn controls frequency. Constant speed is NOT the same thing as constant load; a governor will increase or reduce fueling to match the load as it varies.

Thank you!

I was told by someone that is was a 240, I have not tried anything other then starting it, do you remeber by any chance how much they used to sell for? A guy bid it up to $1600 on ebay but I was told they are worth more then that remanufactured. I know this one is from the late 60's early 70's, Here is a photo of it, I appreciate the help!!

I would recommend using a transformer to kick the voltage up this reason.

As drcampbell said, the insulation may or may not be able to take it. In addition the thermal overloads(if it has any) are going to be wrong. Lastly, you can potentially pull twice the amps thru the safeties before it decides to kick out. Twice the amps will likely annihalate the generator. A dry type transformer will kick the volts where you need them and not compromise your generator. T'll be cheaper in the end. Jus fuse protect both sides. Just my .02

Dr cambell, sorry to inform you but some of these engines were set for a load on refer units for the railroad. These were set to run at a constant speed regardless because the load was always the same. When one of these units was placed on a location of 6 mobile homes the engine would not maintain the load and most times it was to 'hot' so to speak. I removed the 'constant speed' governor and installed a 'woodruff' hydralic governor which maintained the speed of the crankshaft to match the load needed. The constant speed governor would NOT 'pick up' the engine rpm when a larger load was placed on the generator. Confusing but not confusing. Maintaining 60 cycles and I set it for 60.4 with almost '0' droop speed. Customer was happy then.

Honeslty, I am not planning on using it for anything, I am trying to sell it..this one did come off the railroads and the person that won an auction on Ebay wanted to use it for a campground and called detroit to find out if it would run at 430 but decided they did'nt want it after it only runs at 230. Now I have someone wanting to buy it to put it on the back of their ice cream truck..which is probably not a good idea because they are made to sit and they sound like a train is coming....Do you happen to know what a fair price would be for a remanufacted one? Thanks
