Caterpillar bites?

Anyone ever get bit or stung by a caterpillar? I thought this was nonsense until today. My 9 year old got stung/bit by a IO Caterpillar or Automeris IO Fabricius Saturniidae????

She yelled for an hour or so and her hand swelled up badly. We gave her Benedryl orally and topically put meat tenderizer and Benedryl on it. After a few hours it subsided. Has anyone ever heard of this?

Re: Caterpillar bites?

I have definitely heard of caterpillar bites, some can be deadly. I saw a medical show featuring a rather common one that lives in fruit trees down south and if it just touches you it is VERY painful.

Re: Caterpillar bites?

I was under the impression it was a sting. I've always heard that some of those stings were very painful. I think I would call an ER or doctor and see if there is anything other than pain to worry about. I hope your daughter will do well.

Roof, did you see the Caterpillar that stung her? If you did was it something like this? My Mother was stung by one of these as a child, she said the pain was unbearable,we were always cautioned growing up to not touch one of these things!! http://neuro.bcm.edu/eagleman/asp/

Re: Caterpillar bites?

They are real. Been bit by a fuzzy one and a gypsy moth. Both were like a real bad pinch or pick. I did not have any reactions to them though?

Re: Caterpillar bites?

I was watching an old Andy Griffith show and they used a large T-Bone steak to place over swelling, you might want to try that.......

Re: Caterpillar bites?

Actually on further research they don't bite they have spines in their fur/fuzz and the spines have poison in them.

Re: Caterpillar bites?

I had always heard that it hurt, a lot. Was it one of the black and orange ones I remember from when I used to live in your part of the world? Is your daughter OK?

Re: Caterpillar bites?

yep, they sting like hell.
Another bug to watch out for is the Devils Walking Stick...they look like walking sticks, but are orange and black. My son got too close to one and it shot a stream of liquid straight into his eye. Swelled shut within minutes and he was screaming from the pain. Apparently they have extremely good aim and aim for the eyes as a defense system. I think I remember Teddy Roosevelt even writing about them. It took a week for the redness in my sons eye to go away. There are some strange creatures out there.
Your daughter will be fine, but probably wont touch another catepillar again.
