Roof mount was not an option for me...So talking to a guy at the local CB Shop...I ended up with a Wilson 1000 antenna mounted to the driver bed rail AT LEAST 1 ft behind the cab (mine is about 2 ft behind cab) SWR is at 1.1

Ok....so I bought a heavy duty spring and it raised the antenna above the cab about 2/3 of the way. The SWR came down below 3 on chan 40 but is still at 3 on 19. What gives? The ground is not really an issue. Could it be the coupler I used to tie the two different lengths of coax together?

Based on what the old guy up at the CB Shop said...YES it could be the problem...Try moving it back and see if you get any difference. I'm not expert, just going off what this guy says...he has been in the business a long time

Z71...If distance between vertical antenna & rear of cab is 9"..I'll say NO, not the problem. Why..cause my 6ft francis (& others) were about 6" from cab, maybe less..real low swr's. How long is your fglas antenna?

I'm really rusty on all the tech. stuff. More thoughts...

Did you just get this cb/antenna..if so..did you see it used..low swr's etc. Are you using radio swr meter or external? Curious....

How do you know mount has a good ground? 12V test light will confirm. Is the coax good and all same type?(coax can break down) Not best way..adding extra (makeup) length as you did, but should be ok. Connectors (259) need to be tight. If they were added DIY, if one got sloppy putting them on..not good.

If you feel all above ok, then I'm thinking maybe antenna no good? Like I said my 6ft francis & even shorter hot rod didn't need ANY swr adjustments. But..all parts used were good. If you wanna come here you can try mine. Good luck!
