Cigarette lighter power, which wire is positive?

I have a portable air compressor which plugs into a cigarette lighter. I want to replace the plug with alligator clips so I can hook it directly to the battery. Which wire is positive, the one which goes to the tip of the plug, or the one that goes to the outer tension clips? Or does it even matter?

Re: Cigarette lighter power, which wire is positive?

Hot is the one that attaches to the pin that sticks out the snout on your plug. Ground goes to the "housing" on the sides.
