Looking at getting some self defense and would like opinions on what model and cal. to get.
Have kinda looked at the Glock, Wather, and a few others. Want something that the salty south and water won't harm with good maintenance and cleaning. Must be able to be carried in a baggy pocket or fanny pack.
What do you all think????
well a mid caliper can kill a low caliper may be just a flesh wound id go 38 at the least
and any higher end gun will survive with proper cleaneing

I have a Glock 26 that I like for concealed off-duty carry. I like it for several reasons, but the biggest is that I can shoot it accurately with no more regular practice than any other firearm. I have found the smaller guns like the Superlights needed me to visit the range more often to maintain my proficiency.

I'm a fan of the Browning HiPower automagic. They come in 9mm and slightly heavier 40 S&W. I have relatively small hands, and it fits my hand good. Mine is "made in Belgium, assembled in Portugal". It's a quality piece. Not cheap, at over $800 MSRP. It's a "full size" pistol, but smaller than some other brands, and small enough for concealed carry. Click here.
My 9mm HiPower is a full 32 ounces without the clip. If I wanted a lighter-weight CC pistol, I'd probably go for the Walther PPK that's made by Smith & Wesson in a .380 ACP bore. It's a little less money than the Browning, and with a less-powerful bullet, but well regarded as a CC weapon. Click here.
There are lots of good possibilities. Try a few and see what feels right for you. I would agree with the idea that anything less than .38 special is too little to be effective (though better than nothing).
I have a Kahr that I carry. It is a K40 Elite 98 model in .40SW. I really like it, and it's great quality, though I should have gone for a poly frame Kahr for the reduced weight. Stainless is heavy.
When I am not carrying the Kahr I have a Taurus Ti model in .38 special. It is superlight, can handle .38+P for than extra punch, and has a rust preventing coating on it of some kind (forget the name). This is a great carry gun. So light you don't even know it's there, and with a revolver you don't have to worry about carrying with one in the chamber.

I'll second the Kahr, I carry a CW9. It's the 9mm model. The thin profile makes it easy to conceal and it's very reliable and fun to shoot. Otherwise, go with the Glock if it conceals for you (too thick for me).

I carry a Glock 36 single stack .45 most of the time but when I need a smaller more compact weapon for carrying while wearing lighter clothing, I have a Colt Pony Pocketlite .380 single action, stainless steel.
It will fit in the palm of my hand or easily in a front or back blue-jean pocket. It has reasonable stopping power(not like the .45)but quick and easy to present if necessary!

North American Arms .380 for me. Small enough to conceal almost anywhere but heavy enough for it not to "sting" when you shoot it. American made in Utah.

I second the Glock 26...9mm 8 rounds, light weight, and easy to conceal.
And, one of the best shooting guns I have used. Minimal kick, stays on target, and easy to hold.
In my opinion, I wouldn't use a calibre less than 9mm. I have a great Walther PPK 380, but like the stopping power of the 9mm better.
Also note, some of you guys are recommending guns that would require a trench coat to conceal!! I loved my Beretta 92f, but off duty it's like carrying a brick around!!
The Glock 26 fits nicely in a fanny pack or a pants pocket with a shirt over it.
If you don't care about firepower, the most reliable, rust resistant, and doesn't care about dirt, is a simple 38 calibre stainless wheel gun. Best example: Sometimes I carry a Smith & Wesson model 60...38 calibre, 5 shot, stainless steel. I've cut the thumb grip on the hammer off so it doesn't catch on clothing.

The Colt Pony is a double action. The Colt Mustang is the single action. I carry the Pocketlite Pony because of it's light weight. Stainless and aluminum.

You're right! (brain fart!)
I was thinking(not very well!)about the hammer not locking back after each round.(double action only)
Don't be afraid! I do know better!LOL

I can only make recommendations based on what I have.
I own:
Sig Sauer P220 - .45 cal (I've had for 10 years)
Glock 23 (Compact) - .40 cal (I've had for 6 years.)
Glock 30 (Sub-Compact) - .45 cal (I've had for 2 years.)
All of these guns are excellent! Of these three pistols, 80% of the time I prefer to carry my Glock 23 -.40cal.
It is so easy and comfortable to conceal.
