I prefer a S&W revolver, they never jam, and they do not spill brass on the ground. In a hurry, you may forget one behind, god forbid. .357 is the caliber to have, magnums with hollow point will do the job and more.
If I was buying a new CC gun today, it would be the Springfield Armory XD40 SubCompact High Capacity (XD SC HC).
More than enough power.
High capacity
23oz (unloaded)
Built in accessory rail
Lifetime warranty
Etc, Etc, Etc.
If you are not familiar with Gun Tests magazine, they review all sorts of guns and compare them to comperable brands and models. They don't take any advertising (so you can't accuse them of letting $$$ sway their opinions) and they test guns off the rack from gunshops, rather than one that a manufacturer may have "tuned up" a little before it was tested.
That being said, they recently gave the afformentioned pistol an A+ rating, which is highly unusual. In fact, I can't remember them stating a single negative regarding it which is unusual as well.

There's a big pawn and gun there in Daytona, look around in there for something that fits your hand and that you like. ANY handgun is going to need maintaince, SS included. sweat is just as bad or worse than salt water. Marine supply houses sell a product called Boshield T-9. it was developed to stop rust and corrosion on aircraft parts. good product to wipe down firearm with, inside and out after cleaning. As far as calibers, the biggest one you can shoot accurately. Around the house , I keep a kahr MK40 w.N/S in my pocket. When I go anywhere, I carry that and a Sig 245 w.N/S. Both are loaded with Winchester L.E. SXT, 180 gr. JHP in the .40, 230 JHP in the .45. Always have a tactical re-load somewhere close (spare loaded magazine). It's good you decided to take responsibility for your and your family's safety. you owe it to them and yourself to practice regulary and become profecient. The more confidence you gain, the less likely you are to use it unless you absolutely have to. Always buy the best you can possibly afford, this is NOT the area to try and get by cheap. S&W also offer a line of M&P polymer pistols in .40 and a lifetime warranty.

I'll second the Kahr, I carry a CW9. It's the 9mm model. The thin profile makes it easy to conceal and it's very reliable and fun to shoot. Otherwise, go with the Glock if it conceals for you (too thick for me). </div></div>I have the same problem as you ,the Glock is too thick for me also,I have a Model 32 (.357 Sig) very nice handgun, although not as concealable as the Kahr.

.380, 9mm are too small in my opinion. I'm not taking any chances, and neither should you.
Oh, and I believe you can also feed .38 ammunition through a .357, but not vice versa. </div></div>You are correct, you can fire .38 in a .357,but the case is too long on a .357 round to accidentally fit in a .38,you can also shoot .44 Special in a .44 mag Etc.

The Kahr PM9 is the smallest 9mm I have found that is good to carry everyday. ANtyhing else has a fat grip or sticks out here or there. It is full 9mm +p powered and fits in the palm of your hand weighs about a pound. Glocks are best for a dirty environment they fire no matter what but they are all larger.

Go find an indoor range that rents guns. Try anything that YOU like the feel of. Then go to another range & do it again. When you find something that YOU are comfortable with, BUY IT.
Everybody here means well but a personal defense handgun is just that... PERSONAL.
Once you find something you like, take some classes too.

You guys have some big pockets if you can fit some of those guns in them. As far as a pocket gun I opt for a P32 or P3AT. I own a P32 and its a great gun. It is small, light, functions perfectly, accruate enough. It isnt very pretty but it works for me. I know a lot of people think the 32 is too small but 7 32's in the gut would make anyone think twice. If your still worried get a P3AT its a .380.
