Dead Battery Charger

I have a Sears DieHard batter charge model 200.71310 that quit working. I had the charger on the dual batteries of a 2000 Ford 7.3L. It was charging for a few minutes, then the charger made some noises. Then the charger stopped charger, and appears dead (no lights, meter, charging, noise, etc).

I had the charger set to 12 volts, automatic regular, 10 amps.

I did some simple continuity checks with a meter and the basic circuits seem fine. There may be some problems around the microprocessor...I don't know.

I also checked the outlet, and it works fine (not switched circuit breaks on the house panel).

What else can I try to troubleshoot the problem/solution?

Is there an internal circuit breaker? How is it reset?

Thanks.

With the charger making a noise has me wondering what might of happened unless the transformer gave up the ghost. So with it unpluged check the resistance between the power leads and see if you see any. If so then the primary on the transformer should be ok. Then you would need to start checking the output of the transformer, this will all be on AC until you get through the diodes. You can also back trace from the output on the DC side. As far as a circuit breaker I don't know but if it has one it might be on a automatic reset and no way to reset it manually. Also it should be on the positive output lead of the charger before you get into the electronics. With out it being in front of me it is hard to tell you what to check next.

I have an older Shauwer (sp?) when I try to charge a dead battery it sometimes clicks off - sounds like a bimetal thermo switch when mine shuts off - but once it cools it starts charging again. There's no manual reset. Maybe your overload control doesn't work?

That charger was recalled by the CPSC for being a fire hazard.
Sears Battery Chargers Recall by Schumacher

Quote:
About 100,000 Sears DieHard battery chargers, Model
No. 200.71310, made by Schumacher Electric Corp. The recalled
battery chargers have date codes H961 through H972
molded into the plastic base. Battery chargers with the number
1682 on a white sticker on the back of the charger have been
modified and are not recalled. Sears sold the battery chargers
for about $65 from January 1996 through February 1997.
Problem: The battery charger could short, causing the transformer
to overheat posing a potential fire hazard. CPSC is aware
of one alleged fire involving this battery charger. No injuries resulted.

What to do: Return the charger to the nearest Sears Auto
Center, Sears Hardware store, or Sears Dealer store for a free replacement.
For information, call Sears at 1-800-SEARS64.
