Rick M, JustCris,
You'll like the tankless water heater. Hoever, it does take a little getting used to. I installed a whole-house lp inside system (kind of wish I'd gone with the outside unit), along with a whole house water filter/softener system. Did it all in a 2 1/2 day weekend, by myself. What I've noticed is that at the furthest faucet (the upstairs bathtub), it takes about 3 or 4 gallons of running water to get the water HOT. The brand I installed was a Noritz whole house LP model. I think I paid around $900 for it (two years ago). Then I paid another $400 + for the stainless steel chimney and vent to properly vent it to the outside (and that puppy can put out a lot of heat). I would highly recommend installing a cartridge filter inline after the water heater to trap calcium particulates that are created when the water heats up in such a short amount of space (ask me how I learned about that). Otherwise, you end up with half flow at the faucets that have screen aerators. I did all of this at my lake house, and I would do it all over again in a heartbeat (other than maybe installing an outside unit to save a few $$$). As a weekend place, I would turn down the thermostat on my gas tank water heater to the lowest setting, and turn it up when I got to the lake house. This allowed some pretty nasty stuff to grow inside the tank when I wasn't using the hot water, so, the hot water would smell like sulfur until the tank was emptied out. Anyway, now, we have 'almost instant' endless hot water. The added plus is that the unit came with a remote control, so you can keep the water heater in a closet (or outside), and control the temperature setting from inside (although, I think I have ours set at around 125 degrees because I like hot showers).
If you do this, make sure you buy 2 or three times the number of fittings that you think you'll need to use. My lake house is about 10 to 12 miles outside of town, and if I needed anything plumbing-related, it was an easy 1 to 1 1/2 hours killed. Much easier to over buy and take all of the unused (and unmolested) stuff back for a refund. The reason I went with an inside instead of outside unit was because:
1. I was worried about the unit rusting before it's time.
2. I was worried about someone fiddling with it when I wasn't there.
just my .02 cents worth
