"Firewood" from newspaper

For Christmas, my family got me a roller to make "logs" out of newspaper. I remember reading years ago that you should only burn newspaper without colored ink, because the colored ink had lead. Now there is a lot more colored ink, so I'm hoping there is less lead. Does anybody have any tips on burning paper for heat?

yes it has been reduced
but think of the children they shouldnt be in the fireplace anyway

and id usereal wood for cooking no paper cause of other chemicals in ink and not too good taste

Re: "Firewood" from newspaper

I'd be surprised if there is still lead in newspaper ink. Not a good ingredient for something you touch. It was removed from paint long ago, don't see why it would still be allowed in ink.

Re: "Firewood" from newspaper

Probably the best use for newspapers today... burning them that is.

Re: "Firewood" from newspaper

i tried one of those 20 years ago. Made smoke, big mess, no heat. Now I have a wood stove at the cabin. If I was going to burn wood at this house I would use an insert and still burn wood. New houses with a real fireplace are not allowed here to be built. I have an older place so I stll can burn wood if I want to. I like the looks of the inserts also.

Re: "Firewood" from newspaper

Newspaper ink is made from vegetable oil these days instead of solvent based inks, that is why it smudges everywhere. Most of the lead in older printings came from the press plates that were made with a lot of lead. The color inks these days are made from mostly from dyes as compared to pigments, so there is almost no (Not None) heavy metals.

One cavet to all of this is the glossy advertisement inserts that your Sunday edition is full of. Those do use high solvent inks and I am not sure about the heavy metal content. However, as had been stated above, it will all go up the chimney and the amounts you are talking about are insignificant.

The newspaper logs would be good for starting a wood fire but I wouldn't use them for heat. I got an insert from Buck Stove Corp. and man, this thing will run you out of the house when I feed it some good red or white oak. I have to watch using too much paper to start it or the ashes will plug the catalyst.
The insert works great; highest gas bill so far has been $49 - all the wood is free if you don't mind sweating a bit to cut it.

Re: "Firewood" from newspaper

You know the old saying: If you cut your own wood, it warms you twice.
Friend of mine in Utah would stop at several places on the way home and pick up old smashed pallets for wood. Price was really good to.

Re: "Firewood" from newspaper

I should do that here at Wal-Mart. They have a big stack of FUBAR pallets out back that are there for the taking. As long as it's not treated wood.

How cool is that? Modern art. The kids burned up all the old pallets in the New Year's Eve bon fire.

Re: "Firewood" from newspaper

Remeber that most pallets are made of Pine. Pine is one of the softer woods out there and will leave more creosote on your chimney liner. You will need to clean your chimney more often to prevent chimney fires. I would advise against burning pallets.

Happy 2008!

Re: "Firewood" from newspaper

The only pallet shop I know of in our area uses exclusively hardwoods, and sells the scraps for firewood at that.

Re: "Firewood" from newspaper

Right, pallets are all hardwood. Cheap hardwood, but hardwood none the less.
