Flameproofing oil Cat diesel engine

Hi We have an old Cat engine on a drill rig which we are converting to air start etc. Our stumbing block has been the glow plugs which are the one remaining element that has an electric current. Does anyone know of means of substituting an intrinsically safe pre-heating system for the glow plugs?

We operated one back 30 years ago. If it got cold, we used starting fluid of some type.

Why don't you want to use any electricity?

What engine is it? Model number? Where are you located, how cold does it get? Depending on what it is, it may not need the glow plugs anyway.

I doubt it is glowplugs.CAT mainly uses a Intake air heater element and its probabley a 3126 series engine.

I agree, but he said it is an old engine and the only remaining electric part is the "glow plug" so that rules out a HEUI engine.
