I withdraw my concerns over the Escape Hybrid. FoMoCo's I4 is a well built engine. My bad.

The 2009 Ford Escape Hybrid is equipped with a new-for-2009 2.5-liter I4 engine which may or may not be as well built as its predecessors. Time will tell.
The Atkinson Cycle (not to be confused with the Atkins diet) refers to the thermodynamic cycle, not the mechanisms used to get there. If an engine has a greater expansion ratio than compression ratio, such that the cylinder pressure is close to atmospheric pressure when the exhaust valve opens, it's running the Atkinson Cycle. It could be a Wankel rotary engine with no "stroke" at all and still be running the Atkinson cycle.
