What issues are these things prone to have? I am a little worried about the trany with those miles.

1996 F-250 extended cab long box five speed. Home made Tymar, 203 Stat, 60 gal in bed fuel cell, 315/75's, no muffler, ebpv welded open 3" to 3" DP, Babies. 290K, still chugging, and still smoking when cold.
UPDATED 1/1/09 Replace so far. 1 LUK flywheel+clutch, 2 thermostats, 2 set of brakes, 1 set of calipers, 5 CPS, 3 sets of tires, 2 Transfer pumps, 1 Injector modual, 1 Computer, 2 Alt, 2 sets of batteries, 1 Water pump, 6 Belts, 1 PS hose, 2 Sets ball joints, 2 set u-joints, 2 carrier bearing, 2 Speed sensors, 1 oil pres sender, 1 temp sender, 4 sets of e-break cables, 1 front fuel tank, 2 rear fuel tanks, 2 set of glow plugs, 7 Glow plug relays, Oil galley o-rings, Turbo pedistal o-rings, EBPV o-rings, 3 sets of Injector O-rings, 1 Vac-pump, 1 new carpet, 1 total paint job.Total $$$ in repairs v/s miles driven = 4.6 cents per mile. Add fuel to that it jumps to 16.5 cents per mile over the life of the truck.
You have a good reason to worry. In my opinon the 3.0L is too much engine for the CD4E trans. The CD4E isn't one of Ford's better ideas, and it is WAY overtaxed behind the 3.0L.
With that many miles I'd be shocked if it were the original trans. I'd be suprised if it is the second trans!

She wants something for the snow so it will see about 1K a year of miles.
I want her to get something larger. I have been looking for a early to mid 90's blazer or a yukon or bronco. Something easy to maintain and something I can plow with to get the plow off my truck.

I second that. I mean if the price is 2 or 3 grand, fine. But I wouldn't drop 10 or 12 grand on something with that many miles. Highway or not that's a lot for a "car".

It is not much money. I think it is in the 2k range. I am thinking it may have been a postal carrier rig.

My 2 cents. I have a family member that is a rural postal carrier. She goes through a vehicle about every two years. Of course she has learned through doing this about 6 years not to pay too much for her work vehicle after she ruined a fairly new Rav4 in about two years when she first started. That does not count in between repairs. I gotta tell you that rural postal stuff is really hard on vehicles. If the one you are looking at has made it that far as a carrier vehicle, it is ready for the graveyard, anytime.
I am thinking that too. I am generally not afraid of miles so Laurie is thinking this is a good deal.
My gut is telling me to stay away.

Maybe see if you can get an oasis run on it & see what kind of history it has,With that many miles though, I think you should go with your Gut on this one.

Escape's are good little "cars", we had an '02 4x4 XLT for a couple years, but if the one your looking at is an old rural postal vehicle and has that many miles, I'd keep looking for something else unless you can get it for like $1000 or maybe cheaper.
