I have a 2001 ford mustang 3.8 automatic. I had a transmission leak appeared to be coming from the tranny pan. Anyway, I dropped the pan and found this in the bottom: IM004870.jpg picture by galexander - Photobucket
I tried to figure out where it went but no luck. Thought somebody might know, thanks.
Well got that unknown part figured out. Replaced with a rubber gasket and still getting a leak. It appears to be coming from the front of the tranny on the passenger side. The pan looked level. This all started after Jiffy Lube dropped the pan and changed the fluid. Wierd thing is it will leak intermittently. Seems like lately if it sits for a few days it will start leaking? I'm stumped?
Wished I had seen the thread earlier. I found the same thing in my '86 F250 C6 pan back in 1996. Had me wondering for about 1/2 an hour.
I guess you did not worry about it as much as I did. I spent about 3-4 hours searching the web and looking at the transmission without a clue where that part went. I think I will try some RTV before I take it in.
I was blessed (cursed) with the ability to figure mechanical things out pretty quick. When I looked at the exposed tranny and the dip stick tube, it just sort of made sense.

Good deal, I consider myself fairly mechanically inclined but who think it would come out of the factory this way. LAMO to me

Holy Crap! I'm thankful for this post. I found the same thing on our '88 T-Bird years ago and never could figure it out---especially since it ran and shifted great.
