A good friend of mine has a 1996 Chevy Silverado 1500 (I know, I know) and it just died on the highway; he had to have it towed to his apartment. According to my friend, the truck died suddenly and the speedometer dropped to zero. Apparently, he's checked the obvious fuses etc.. and hasn't found anything.
If this truck was a PSD I'd be looking at the CPS, however, does anyone know if CPS failure would likely cause these symptoms in a gas Chevy? Would a vehicle speed sensor in a GM cause the engine to quit?
Does anyone have any other ideas on stuff to check on the truck that could be the cause of this problem?
fuel pump!! Check the fuel pressure at the shrader valve, it should have no less than 60 psi if it is a 350ci. If it is 58 psi it is junk, had this same problem with a truck a short while ago at the shop.

Wow, thanks guys for all the great responses.
Today I'll hopefully get a chance to check it out. If it does end up being the fuel pump, where's the best replacement? Also, how difficult is it to change out, just drop the tank? I'm in the middle of Atlanta, and my tools are miles away, same with my friend's, so if anyone has a list of tools that I'll need I'd really appreciate it. Just like a Chevy to quit in the middle of finals week.
I just did one a few months ago on a friends 94 or 95? Z71 The tank was full of gas and we had nothing to transfer it into so we lifted the bed instead of dropping the tank. I think it was 8 bolts that hold the bed on. After unplugging the taillights we lifted it straight up and set it on some milkcrates that were kinda balanced on the frame. You'll need some a/c fuel line disconnect tools to get the lines off the pump and a hammer and screwdriver to get the lock ring off the tank. He got a new pump from Autozone because they were the closest place that had one in stock. Even if the tank had been empty I think raising the bed was the best way. The fuel lines were very short and I'm not sure there was enough slack to where you could get the tank low enough to give your self room to disconnect the fuel lines and wiring.

I think i'd suggest using something like a wooden or brass drift to loosen the lock ring. A wayward spark from the screwdriver, however improbably remote, might find your name in the next Darwin awards book.
I did my Silverado by myself by siphoning the tank, and dropping it, but the next time i'd take the bed off, or at least tip it up on the driver's side.

Good advice, now that I think about it, that was not one of my better moves.
