home generators again

regarding home generators..18kw or so.

whats better...

liquid cooled or air cooled ?

direct coupled gen/engine or belt ? talked with kohler seller, said belt is recommended yearly replacement.

noticed most the liquid cooled are 1800 rpm rather than the high rev 3600 air cooled, gotta be quiter..

Re: home generators again

Well, I would guess and expect the 1800 to be quieter and somewhat more fuel efficient than the 3600, it should also have a longer life expectancy given half as many wear cycles per hour on the innerds of the engine. Would also expect that the cost for a water cooled 1800 to be noticeably higher than a same kW rated air cooled 3600.

A question that comes to mind is: How much use do you expect to put on it?

Re: home generators again

All i know about it?
The Robins Subaru motors seem to get the most hours per gallon.
Belt drive seems better on paper. Never owned one though.

1800 RPM and liquid cooled is top notch and TOP PRICE.

Re: home generators again

Liquid and 1800 rpm are the stuff.

You can also do some cool things with a liquid cooled genset that you cant with an aircooled unit.

If you want to really go all out and get the best efficiency possible you can install a radiator in your furnace or heat pumps indoor unit and heat your home that way. Some folks go way overboard and use a heat exchanger to extract heat from the exhaust.

Most times you can get about the same amount of kW heat as you do electrical output. So if you had an 18kW generator you could figure you could get near that amount in recovered heat energy.

Most times when this is done another radiator with an electric thermostatic fan is installed in series to cool the engine when the indoor unit isnt running. Valving is usually installed as well so you don't heat the place in the summer.

Everything just has to be sized right so you don't overheat or overcool the engine.

Re: home generators again

found a 18kw at ziller in michigan, it s a generac, direct coupled, liquid cooled, 1800 rpm. kohler doesnt seem to have a liquid cooled in a smaller system..... and doesnt direct couple until after 30kw or so according to local kohler sales.

Re: home generators again

I agree 1800rpm and liquid is the way to go but they cost more.

Re: home generators again

Belt drive will get slippage. Then you have to worry about a idler pulley for tension if your pulley sizes are to small.

1800 RRM or 3600 RPM direct coupled is best.

Can easily make a 3600 quiet by building a simple enclosure and running your exhaust outlet up high in the air.

Best of the best, 1800 direct coupled. 1/2 the fuel burned and double the life.
