House A/C is inop!!!!

Hi all,

Thank God I have more then one A/C.... My wife called me at work today and said one of the A/C's was cycling and making a funny noises. I told her to shut it down and I would check it out when I got home.

I fired it back up when I got home and the compressor and fan (on the compressor) started up just find. My Air Handler in my attic did not kick on so the compressor started to freeze up.

I plan on going up in the attic this weekend to check thing out. My question is... Can Someone please provide me with the step in troubleshooting the Air Handler. I would really appreciate it.

Thanks,

Barry

check the Evaporator fan motor.. make sure its running.. you might be cycling the compressor on low pressure switch (cause the indoor fan isn't running)

I'm not an AC expert, but I don't like to pay basic trouble-shooting. First I'd want to check outside to see if the dog or some other critter had gnawed on the control wires to the ground unit. Next, I'd switch the thermostat to the manual fan setting and check at the air handler to be sure that there is low voltage power to the fan relay (it is possible that you have critters in the attic). If it's getting a signal there, I'd verify that 115v power is getting to the blower motor and look to see if any overload breakers were tripped on the motor. Lastly, if I couldn't find a simple cause, I'd get professional help.

a little correction if something ate or chew the wires to the condenser unit (outside) the compressor wont run.. sounds like a supply fan motor prob..
