How can I take a VHS video and put it on my computer?
I have some ultrasound video of our first that the wife and I would like to send to family that we don't see very often. It's on a VHS and it would be great if I could get it onto my computer so I could e-mail it. Is this even possible? I just have a standard Sylvania DVD/VHS combo player.
I asked the sonographer (?) if she could save it digitally on a USB drive, but I guess they haven't updated their equipment to keep up with the latest technology craze.
Thanks

get a second vcr hook together and copy. this will allow you to send a more of the video... send by mail. it is not as nice but the file size of 5 minutes of video is large

Re: How can I take a VHS video and put it on my computer?
I'd say go to best buy or something of the like and ask for a analog to digital video converter. If you have a newer computer it'll hook up via firewire. Windows XP has a built in capturing utility that should make it easy. As for encoding it, if you can, use Xvid as this will make the file size as small as possible.
I've never used the built in XP program but i suspect it'll work to do all this and encode it with whatever.

I thought I saw something like that in the latest Sharper Image catalog. I know they have them for vinyl records to MP3. But here is a link to another chat room that asks the same thing. Looks like good info.

Re: How can I take a VHS video and put it on my computer?
If you don't want to mess with the equipment for just one video you can check some local photo stores and see if they will do the conversion for you. For the few bucks it costs it would be easier then buying the equipment and getting it all setup yourself. I did this a few years back and it worked out fine.
works good; however the manual and included software differ. You feed it an antenna signal and can make a file from it or burn it on DVD.
The manual and included software differ; it's running on the wife's Toshiba laptop w/ 512 MB RAM and a slow Celeron; so it takes about as long as the clip is to convert (at least on my test DVDs).
I plan to burn all my Saturday Night's Main Events onto DVDS, the tapes are getting ragged....
And, Congrats on numero uno. You'll learn to treasure a full night's sleep verrrry sooooon....
Re: How can I take a VHS video and put it on my computer?
I agree that hiring someone to do it would be the way to go if you don't plan to need the technology otherwise.
I would have suggested getting setup for more of the same with a grandchild on the way but todays digital cams and camcorders have eliminated the need for A/D conversion so you can put the money towards better cameras.Ron G
PS.If all else fails mail it to me and I will do it for you.
Re: How can I take a VHS video and put it on my computer?
Go to Best Buy and ask for a DAZZLE, you can connect it to nearly any output and then to your computer. I have used it with my direct reciever and my VCR and it works great. It will run about $100.
Re: How can I take a VHS video and put it on my computer?
I've done it the hard way.
I playback the VHS tape on a VCR while recording it to miniDV using my camcorder, that way I have a digital master. I then use Nero to transfer the digital files from the miniDV tape via the camcorder and firewire to the computer. Once it's on the hard drive you can do most anything with it. Make DVDs, short clips to e-mail, etc.
