how do i ship tires?

well i'm wanting to send my 35" mud terrains to someone on here and I Was wondering how I would go about doing that the cheapest way possible. I heard that UPS is pretty cheap. How do I go about ordering the postage and preparing each tire? Do i need to get a weight?

Re: how do i ship tires?

I tried this last year.
UPS required individual boxes.
DHL did the shipping for $33.00 per tire and wheel. Size was 265/85/16. They wrapped some tywraps through a hole of each wheel and attached the shipping tag.
About 25-33 % of UPS. Great service for me from Prescott Arizona to Daytona Beach Florida.

Re: how do i ship tires?

I found FedEx Ground was about 1/3 cheaper then UPS... Just placed cardboard on top and bottom then shrinkwrapped them. Any common carrier will allow all four wrapped up on a skid. Most other carriers like FedEx and UPS will require each tire wrapped individually.

On edit... you may have to take to a dropoff location for all the carriers and they will weight them there and figure your fees. You can also caculate ship fees on their web sites.

Re: how do i ship tires?

I bought tires new, I believe they were delivered by DHL. Each had a shipping label that was held on by box tape wrapped around the tire (through the middle).

I would suggest at least TWO shipping labels per unit. Otherwise if one gets lost the unit never gets delivered.

Re: how do i ship tires?

weigh yourself on the bathroom scale, then weigh yourself with the tire. our ups man allways has unwrapped tires onboard for the service station down the road.

Re: how do i ship tires?

It was a few years ago but FedEx just slapped a label on them, taped it through the middle and away they went.
More recently I shipped my old V-code front leaf springs through FedEx. All I did was tape a "boxing mitt" on each end - no problem.
They will weigh the stuff there but if you want ballpark numbers then the tire mfr or tirerack.com should have tire weights.
