intermittent electrical gremlin on 1995 Chevy Tahoe
Over the past month or so my daily driver (1995 Chevy Tahoe, 5.7L with 122k miles) has been suffering what what appears to be an intermittent electrical problem that causes the engine to shut off. This problem will occur whether the car is warmed up or just starting, but it only seems to happen at low speeds (slowing for a turn, parking, etc.). When it happens, the engine will stop as if I turned the key off, and the dash indicator lights will illuminate like when you first turn the key to RUN and it does its KOEO self-tests.
At this point I will hit the hazard lights, shift into neutral and try to restart. About half the time it fires right up and goes on like nothing happened. The other half of the time it will turn over but not fire, and the tachometer will jump around like a seismometer needle for a few seconds. When that happens I usually coast for a few seconds and try again, at which point it starts to work again.
Has anybody else experienced this type of problem before? My initial guess would be that I have some electrical fault that is causing the PCM to shutdown either through a lack of power or through some self-protection mode. The jumpy tach during an unsuccessful restart attempt has me wondering if there's some sort of back-feed from the coil or spark plugs into the computer or instrumentation.
Thanks for the help,
RD
