Unhappy Moon Roof Question

Wife just had to have one, I never used the thing. BUT now it quit. Last year it would open but I had to help it close. [son just had to play]. It was making noise and I found it had mysteriously opened about 1 inch. I played with the switch and nothing worked. My son had to check it out while was driving and blew the radio, interior lights and the radio antannae. Vehicle is a 1999 Mercury Mystique. I checked all the fuses under the hood ald all are good. I think there is another fuse box right?. ANy thoughts on the repair? Just test the motor and replace if necessary? WHile the car was in the impound lot someone broke part of the upper consol so I know I will need to replace that or at least make something to kep the front of that up. Removing the whole assembly for lubrication also?
Thanks

Did you get the radio, lights and antenna fixed? My bet is there is a fuse box in the cabin that still has a blown fuse if you did not get them taken care of and that the sunroof is on the same circuit.

If you had the sunroof installed as an after market accessory, it probably has its own fuse hidden where you can't see it. Take it back to the installer and ask him where is the main fuse for the sunroof. The other accessories probably stopped working due to the high surge the short caused.

Good point, Bowser. I didn't think about an aftermarket unit - and the way the original post is worded you probably are right.

Thanks for the reply's, however all is stock. I got mad at the son for fiddling while was driving. I/we could have been stranded. Will look in the dash today and see what there is. The book sent with the vehicle did not say there was another panel but books lie sometimes. There was no mention of a sun/moon roof fuse either. Obviously they are connected somewhere. thanks

It appears from a google search that the 99 mystique fuse panel in the cab is under the instrument panel on the drivers side. My suggestion is to look along or below the lower dash panels for an access panel that pops out to get to it.

If you have the original window sticker or an options sticker which sometimes is located in the glove compartment, look and see if the sunroof is listed. If it isn't listed, it's an after market unit. Sometimes dealers will add feature to mark up the price. I remember Toyota dealers were bad about this some years ago. Actually it wasn't the dealer, it was the distributor who loaded the car with items such as pin stripping, various chrome, and sunroofs. If you don't find any evidence of how the vehicle is equipped, you can always call the manufacturer and give them the vin number. Many times they will be cooperative and look up the accessories for you.

My wife has similar problem with her Volvo moon/sun roof. We don't use it anymore. Hers is cable driven, and the cable needs to be replaced and everything needs to be cleaned and lubed. Wouldn't hurt to get a new gasket too. Too much $$$ for dealer to do it, so we don't use it. The fact that you fuse blew probably means the motor was working real hard to move the thing. Probably needs cleaning and lubing maybe new cable

Well I dug in, the owners manual lies also. There is a fuse box but not where or what to do to find it. I looked under the dash and nothing looked familiar. So there was a large black item with a real small 1/2 moon button on it. I pushed it and the fuse panel dropped down. The 7.5 amp fuse had blown. I replaced it and the radio/interior lights and antannae work now. Since I was there I removed the upper consol panel and poked around. I have power there so I removed the gear box and motor assembly. I got some test wires and went directly to battery. WOW did those wires get hot fast. So I will be looking at the web site going gone suggested and looking for the broken consol panel as well. Thanks all for the help.
